Owen Wilson is known for many things, but his knack for comedy has made him a reliable presence at the box office, with hits including Wedding Crashers, Old School, and Night at the Museum. After taking a bit of a step back from the big screen, Wilson returned to the spotlight in 2025 with Apple TV’s comedy series Stick, followed by this year’s action-comedy Runner, starring alongside Alan Ritchson. Both projects found a warm reception from critics and audiences, making his latest release, Rolling Loud: The Movie, a surprising stumble at the box office.
Rolling Loud: The Movie premiered on Oct. 2, but the film arrived with surprisingly little visible marketing surrounding it leading up to its release. One of the few moments that generated significant attention was Owen Wilson filming at a real Travis Scott concert, and the footage quickly went viral. However, the concert appearance took place nearly two years ago, meaning the initial buzz surrounding it had long since faded by the time Rolling Loud finally hit theaters. With little momentum behind the movie’s theatrical release, it now appears that the film is struggling to attract audiences.
Rolling Loud has officially wrapped its opening weekend with a disappointing $475,019, making it Wilson’s lowest-grossing theatrical debut. Of course, it doesn’t help that it played in relatively few theaters across the United States. The movie only played in 868 theaters, significantly limiting its potential audience and contributing to its disappointing box-office results. For comparison, Verity and Digger both played in more than 3,000 theaters during their opening weekends.

One notable comparison is Zoolander, which also struggled at the box office when it was released in 2001. However, Zoolander opened just weeks after the September 11 attacks, which significantly affected the theatrical landscape at the time. It also made over $15 million during its debut weekend, before grossing $60 million at the end of its run. Despite its box-office performance, the comedy eventually found a much larger audience on home video and became a cult classic, giving it a second life that Rolling Loud has yet to achieve.
Rolling Loud follows Wilson’s character, Hank, a furniture salesman and overprotective father who takes his 13-year-old son (Christian Convery) to the Rolling Loud festival without telling his wife (Jolene Blalock). However, Hank quickly loses his son in the massive crowd and spends the rest of the night desperately searching for him, enlisting the help of his hapless coworker (Matt Rife) and one of the festival’s volunteers (Christine Ko) along the way.
Despite the movie’s disappointing box-office performance, Rolling Loud has received a more positive response from audiences, earning a 69% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. While that isn’t enough to make up for its lackluster theatrical run, it suggests the movie may find a more receptive audience once it reaches home viewing.
Fortunately for Wilson, he won’t have to wait long for another major release. The actor will reprise his role as Kevin in the highly anticipated sequel to Meet the Parents, titled Focker In-Law, alongside Ben Stiller and Teri Polo. The sequel is scheduled to hit theaters on Nov. 25, just in time for Thanksgiving.
