A ThunderCats Film is Already in Development

A live-action ThunderCats film is in development. Earlier this year, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard said his next movie could be an adaptation of the cartoon. “Simon (Barrett) and I are still actively working on a script,” Wingard said. Barrett wrote the screenplay for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire with Wingard and Terry Rossio. “We finished our last draft basically right when I was going into production with this movie (Godzilla x Kong) and we just had to put everything on hold,” he said. Wingard added, “(But) right now, we’re actively working on it again. So, whether that means that’s the next thing I do or (not), I’m not sure. But, it’s definitely one of the top priorities I have right now in terms of working on a script.”

ThunderCats was one of the most-watched cartoons of the 1980s. It focuses on a group of cat-like people from another planet who must escape their home world, Thundera. While living on Third Earth, the group has to go against Mumm-Ra, a sorcerer who wants a gem in the ThunderCats’ hold called the Eye of Thundera.

CBR ranked ThunderCats No. 2 on a list of the 25 most nostalgic Saturday morning cartoons. The show combined science fiction and fantasy, which hooked kids from all over the world. The popularity spawned two reboots. The 2011 series starred Will Friedle (Batman Beyond, Boy Meets World) as Lion-O, while the 2020 series, ThunderCats Roar starred Max Mittelman (Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) as Lion-O. However, both series proved to be less successful than the original.
