Contractor-focused “drawing intelligence” platform uses vision-based AI for drawing reviews

Buildcheck has secured $12m in Series A funding to accelerate the development of its AI-powered “drawing intelligence” platform designed to help teams catch issues, understand changes, and apply standards before construction begins.

The software can turn a contractor’s QA/QC playbooks into custom AI review agents, isolate changes between drawing revisions, identify code issues, and “surface value-engineering opportunities.”

Buildcheck uses computer vision to reads drawings in the “same way a reviewer does”, including components, segments, geometry, dimensions, and spatial relationships. It works from 2D PDFs, with no BIM model, metadata, or special export required. According to the company, it can catch things that a text-based AI structurally can’t, such as a pipe running through a column.

It offers four kinds of checks: drawing health, which identifies missing tags and dimensions, sheet index mismatches, and broken detail references; 2D clash detection, including ceiling device clashes, pipes through columns, and mismatched slab edges; omissions and logical rule checks, such as missing power to pumps, under-rated doors in fire-rated walls, and discrepancies between electrical panels shown on the floor plan and the single-line diagram; and spec-to-drawing checks, which flag instances where the drawing contradicts the written specification or vice versa.

Buildcheck does not use AI blindly. According to the company, in-house experts review every AI output before it reaches the customer, confirming the issue is real and setting its severity. As co-founder and CEO Alexander Michalatos explains Buildcheck combine the speed and breadth of AI with the judgement of people who have actually built things.

Buildcheck customers including DPR Construction, EllisDon, Power Construction, IMC Construction and EMJ Construction use the software across data centres, healthcare, commercial, and residential projects.
