The 2nd edition of Inter Khelo India Centre (KIC) Under-16 Badminton Tournament under the aegis of Department of Youth Resources & Sports, Nagaland, commenced today at Multi Purpose Stadium, Pfutsero in Phek district .

Gracing the opening ceremony as the special guest, MLA Dr Neisatuo Mero, thanked the Department of Youth Resources & Sports for bringing this tournament to Pfutsero.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio we have seen many good changes in our state, he said adding that the government has been supporting sports and young people in many ways.

“Because of this support, our athletes are now winning more medals at the state, national and international levels. This shows that when young people are given the right support they can achieve great things. It also shows that our youth are full of talent and potential,” Dr Mero said.

Further, he urged upon the participants to play with honesty, respect one another and enjoy the game.

Stating that success does not come easily, he said “It comes through hard work.”

One of the most important keys to success is consistency. Whether it is in sports or in any other part of life, staying consistent helps us grow, Dr Mero.

Citing the importance of having a balanced diet and maintaining personal discipline, he said “These things help you stay strong, focused and ready to perform your best.”

Winning is good but what matters most is your spirit, your effort and your sportsmanship, he added.

“God has given each one of us the ability to know what is right and what is wrong. Therefore, it is important that the youth of today use this gift to make good choices in life, and bring a good name not only to themselves and their families, but also to the state and the country as a whole,” Dr Mero said.

As Nagas, we are a young society. Christianity came to Nagaland only about 150 years ago. Until the 1960s, headhunting was still part of our tradition. Urbanisation is not even 100 years old. Even here in Pfutsero, we celebrated just 75 years of our town not long ago. This reminds us how far we have come in such a short time, he said.

82 participants from KICs Phek, Niuland, Wokha, Mokokchung, Zunheboto, Athibung (Peren), Mon, Kiphire and Longleng are vying for top honours in Badminton Singles and Doubles category for both boys and girls.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by Kethosituo Sekhose, Director, Youth Resources & Sports while Rev Dr Kiizhopoyo Tunyi invoked God’s blessings.

Vote of thanks was proposed by Megolhu Dolie, Additional Director, Youth Resources & Sports.

The tournament will conclude on September 10.
