Atishi chosen as new Delhi CM

What’s the story

Senior Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi has been selected as the new Chief Minister of Delhi.

The decision came on Tuesday, following Arvind Kejriwal‘s nomination of her as his successor during a meeting with party legislators.

Kejriwal, who was released from jail last Friday, declared on Sunday that he would step down from the role and would only return to office if the public endorsed his integrity.

Below are some key details about the new Delhi CM.

Atishi’s political journey

Atishi is a prominent figure within the AAP and the government, currently overseeing multiple portfolios including finance, education, and public works department (PWD).

She represents the Kalkaji constituency in the Delhi Legislative Assembly (MLA) and first gained recognition as an advisor to Delhi’s education department.

Following her victory in the 2020 elections, she became an MLA.

Reforms and responsibilities

Atishi’s educational reforms and cabinet responsibilities

Atishi is known for spearheading significant educational reforms in Delhi’s government schools. She played a pivotal role in improving school facilities, enhancing teaching standards, and introducing initiatives like the “Entrepreneurship Mindset Curriculum” and “Happiness Curriculum.”

After ministers Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain resigned due to legal issues in March 2023, Atishi was appointed to the Delhi cabinet where she took charge of education, PWD, power, and tourism ministries.

Atishi’s environmental advocacy and political stance

In addition to her educational work, Atishi is a vocal advocate for environmental issues. She has actively pushed for policies related to renewable energy, pollution control, and sustainability in Delhi.

She has also emerged as a strong critic of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) while Kejriwal and Sisodia were in jail.

She also defended the AAP government during the Delhi water crisis.

Atishi’s significant role in AAP’s growth and progress

Atishi has been instrumental in the growth and progress of the AAP since its inception.

She played a crucial role as a key member of the manifesto drafting committee for the 2013 assembly elections, shaping the party’s objectives and vision.

As an MLA representing Kalkaji assembly constituency, she has led the party’s communication efforts and addressed critical issues like Delhi’s water dispute with neighboring states.
