Ahsaas Channa is stepping into a new phase of her career with Greater Kalesh, her first solo-led Netflix film. Directed by Aditya Chandiok and produced by Terribly Tiny Tales, the Diwali special explores the joys, tensions, and bonds of family life. The film has already captured audience attention for its warm, heartfelt storytelling.
Ahsaas Channa speaks about her first solo-led Netflix film, Greater Kalesh: “Twinkle’s calmness felt different from anything I’ve done before”
Speaking about her experience, Ahsaas shared, “Honestly, when I first read the script, it reminded me of those old-school Disney shorts. It’s not your usual family drama; it’s gentle, familiar, and very kind-hearted. Everyone in the story knows everyone; this warmth is so rare to see now.” She added that amid the current wave of dark and heavy OTT shows, Greater Kalesh feels refreshingly light. “It’s something you can watch with your parents, laugh at, tear up a little, and not feel drained,” she said.
The film follows Twinkle Handa, a young woman who returns home for a surprise Diwali visit, only to realize that the comfort of home comes with its own set of challenges. Ahsaas reflected on her connection to Twinkle, particularly the guilt of not spending enough time with family. “I’ve actually never lived away from home, but I totally relate to Twinkle’s guilt,” she said. “Even if I’m home, I make sure to give my mother at least an hour every day. Twinkle’s mum in the film is loving but quietly strong, which resonated with me deeply.”
For Ahsaas, portraying Twinkle marked a departure from her previous roles, which often leaned toward mischief and expressiveness. “We wanted her to be completely different from anything I’ve done before. She’s calm, she thinks before she reacts, she’s not performative. Playing her felt like growing up on screen,” she explained. Twinkle is also older than Ahsaas herself, and the actress relished the challenge of approaching the character with more stillness and emotional depth.
Ahsaas also praised director Aditya Chandiok, calling him “the warmest director” she has worked with. She reflected on the significance of starring in her first solo-led Netflix film: “To have your face on a Netflix poster is surreal! It’s also my third project with them, and there are two more coming next year. It’s a dream for any actor to find a home like this.”
On Twinkle’s character arc, Ahsaas shared, “She’s complicated. She wants things her way, she overthinks, she probably has a touch of control, but she means well. Her biggest kalesh is being misunderstood. She’s not perfect, but she’s real.”
Ahsaas concluded by emphasizing the evolution of her craft: “I think I’ve always wanted to act. With Greater Kalesh, it’s not just about being relatable anymore; it’s about being real.”
Greater Kalesh is currently trending on Netflix, and its warm, hopeful narrative makes it a must-watch Diwali special for families.
