For years, Anurag Kashyap has been celebrated for his bold, unconventional cinema. Films like Gangs of Wasseypur, Black Friday, and Dev D have cemented his reputation as one of India’s most fearless filmmakers. But behind the scenes, Kashyap was facing battles of a different kind – his health. In a candid conversation during a retreat at Pema Wellness Resort, he revealed how a series of health crises led him to rethink his lifestyle and embark on a journey of healing.

Heart and Asthma Struggles

“I had a heart attack, and I had a series of asthma attacks. I was on steroids, and I had totally lost myself. I imploded. I tried a lot of things. I went to a de-addiction programme, but it didn’t help me. I went to some other places, but it didn’t help me… I never understood what had happened to me,” Kashyap shared.

The director confessed that despite exercising regularly and being considered fit, he could not comprehend the changes his body was going through. “I noticed a shift in my body that I couldn’t explain, including putting on weight and losing and greying hair,” he said.

Kashyap began to understand how stress had taken a toll on him. With structured therapies, yoga, and a liquid diet, he slowly regained control. “The game-changer was my liquid diet, which I thought I wouldn’t survive but managed to,” he recalled.

The Role of Yoga and Pranayama

The filmmaker emphasised that yoga played a key role in his transformation. “For the first time, I saw a massive difference. I have lost 27 kg since then. The yoga teacher taught me Pranayam. That taught me how to calm down, how to throw away stress,” Kashyap said.

He admitted that before the retreat, his life revolved only around work, food, and sleep, leaving little room for personal well-being. “You know, all you think about is work, and then you think about food, and then when you get time to sleep, you sleep, and you don’t focus on other things. It has taught me how to give partial time to things which are important for your own wellbeing,” he explained.

Kashyap’s journey is a reminder that even the busiest lives can benefit from slowing down. His story underscores how mindful practices like diet control, yoga, and pranayam can help reset both body and mind, proving that transformation is possible with the right balance of discipline and care.
