County board members in La Crosse get county farm update, and show support for UWL science center

La Crosse’s city council was not the only local government body to meet on Tuesday.

The La Crosse County Board also had its second meeting of April on Tuesday night, rather than on its usual nights of Monday or Thursday. A Tuesday session is an April tradition, even though members of the board were not up for election this spring. They will be again in 2026.

Supervisors approved appointments to several county committees. They also heard an update on the efforts to sell land at the former county farm, along Lake Neshonoc in West Salem. A county committee decided last week against offering the land for sale at this time, and board chair Tina Tryggestad says the county plans an appraisal of the property, and it will take time to find a possible buyer. Planners of the Country Boom concert have been looking at the lakefront property as a potential site for a new concert venue.

The county board also supported a resolution calling on state lawmakers to include the Prairie Springs science center at UWL in Wisconsin’s next two-year budget. The original Prairie Springs building opened in 2018, but officials in Madison still have not approved a second science building for the La Crosse campus.
