Comedian Kiku Sharda opened up about his weight and health issues, saying that while he is comfortable with his size, weight loss is always on his mind, but not for cosmetic reasons. However, The Great Indian Kapil Sharma Show star does not want six-pack abs either. “I was much lighter when I was doing FIR or when I started doing The Kapil Sharma Show. I will never be a six-pack abs guy, nor do I wish to be,” he said in an interview with Pune Media recently.
However, I do plan to lose weight because, with age catching up, it’s not really the best physical state to be in,” Kiku added.
What are six-pack abs?
Getting a visible six-pack is a common goal for many fitness lovers and gym-goers. Popularly, it is believed that a shredded set of abdominal muscles is the epitome of fitness. And so, phrases like “toning up” or “torching belly fat” are often the one-line pitches for the latest workout or diet fad.
While it is not wrong to set aesthetically based fitness goals, experts believe that training for a strong core and a developed six-pack goes beyond appearances.
“Six-packs” typically refer to the rectus abdominus muscle, which is long and relatively narrow, running from your sternum to your pubic bone, and is responsible for dynamically flexing your spine forward. According to research, this muscle is not necessarily effective as a stabiliser of the spine. Experts believe the strength and appearance of your six-pack are influenced by a variety of factors, which include genetics and belly fat.
Does having chiselled abs mean you are healthy?
Doctors and fitness experts say that while it is popular to have a six-pack, a toned midsection does not necessarily mean you are in the prime of your health. It is also essential to consider your heart health, muscular strength, and endurance along with:
- Flexibility
- Mental wellness
- Homocysteine
- C-reactive protein
- Blood sugar
- Blood pressure
- Lipoprotein
- Cholesterol levels
Many doctors say that in pursuit of six-pack abs, many youngsters begin unhealthy fad diets, which include restrictive eating. Rather than focusing on overall strength, endurance, and flexibility, most of the focus is only on a toned midsection, which causes other health issues as well.
There have been many cases where individuals with well-defined six-pack abs have also endured heart attacks and cardiac arrests. Experts stress the fact that even though exercising and regular workouts are important for heart and overall health, other factors like genetics, stress levels, and lifestyle choices also play significant roles.
