Azam Khan has never been the poster boy for peak fitness, and that conversation just got louder.

Former Pakistan skipper Younis Khan has called on the 26-year-old to take his physical conditioning seriously if he wants to survive international cricket’s demanding pace.

Known for his straightforward takes, Younis didn’t hold back while assessing Azam’s current state, offering both critique and hope.

The Islamabad United batter has been pushed up the order in PSL 10 — a bold tactical shift by the franchise — and Younis was among those who saw promise in the move.

But the praise stopped there. For someone with undeniable power-hitting ability, Azam’s lack of discipline in one key area could be the very thing holding him back.

So while his role at the top is evolving, the bigger challenge might just lie off the field.

‘No shortcuts’: Younis Khan delivers a fitness reality check to Azam Khan

In a recent interview with a local channel, Younis addressed Azam’s approach to fitness in a tone that felt both firm and relatable.

“We all enjoy burgers – I do too – but as professional athletes, we have to show control. Diet and discipline are key at this level,” he said. “If Azam Khan wants a long and successful career, fitness must be a top priority for him. There are no shortcuts.”

While he supported the decision to promote Azam to the top of the order — calling it a clever move to challenge the batter — Younis pointed out technical gaps in his game, particularly his recurring struggle against short-pitched bowling.

“He’s being targeted by fast bowlers, and they’re getting the better of him. That’s a serious concern,” Younis said.

He wrapped up his analysis by applauding Sahibzada Farhan for his form, calling the 29-year-old a player in his prime.
