PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Actress and producer Lucy Liu graced the red carpet for the Philadelphia Film Festival Monday night to receive the Artistic Achievement Award for her new film “Rosemead.”
The actress was joined by the film’s screenwriter, Marilyn Fu, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania.
“It’s incredible to be in Philadelphia. I love this town,” said Fu. “I’m so excited that we get to share ‘Rosemead’ here. It’s very special.”

“Rosemead” is based on a true story of a mother’s love for her son.
Liu plays the role of Irene, a Chinese immigrant who is dying of cancer and struggling to address the mental illness of her teenage son, who she discovers is fixated on mass shootings.
Liu explains what she hopes movie-goers will take away from this film.
“I want them to connect with other people,” she said. “I want them to understand that there is a reason we made this movie and it is to really ask each other how we’re doing and to not feel that sense of shame and to not carry that on.”
Both women credit a journalist named Frank Shyong for finding the story of Irene and her son Joe and for relentlessly reporting on it, so it would be known and remembered.
6abc is a sponsor of the Philadelphia Film Fesitval, which runs through October 26.
