New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has brought national attention to the growing issue of obesity in India, emphasising its long-term health risks and the urgent need for lifestyle modifications. In his Mann Ki Baat address on Sunday, he highlighted the alarming rise in obesity cases, particularly among children, and proposed practical measures to promote better health.

Recent studies and government data indicate a sharp increase in obesity across India. According to the latest statistics:

  • One in eight Indians is now classified as obese.
  • The number of overweight children (aged 5 to 19) has surged from 40 lakh (4 million) in 1990 to 1.25 crore (12.5 million) in 2022.
  • Childhood obesity rates have quadrupled over the past few years, raising serious concerns about long-term health implications.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that in 2022, nearly 250 crore (2.5 billion) people globally were overweight, highlighting the scale of the crisis. Modi underscored that obesity not only affects personal health but also contributes to increasing healthcare costs and national productivity losses.

The role of diet and oil consumption

PM Modi urged citizens to take simple yet effective steps to combat obesity, with a primary focus on reducing excessive oil consumption. He proposed a “10% less oil challenge,” encouraging individuals to cut down on their monthly edible oil intake by 10% and pass on the challenge to others.

“Excessive oil in food is a major contributor to obesity-related health problems like diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension. By making small adjustments in our diet, we can prevent serious health complications,” Modi said.

Renowned cardiac surgeon Dr Devi Shetty supported Modi’s initiative, explaining that the main causes of obesity in India include excessive carbohydrate intake (rice, chapati, sugar) and high oil consumption.

Modi’s message resonated with top Indian athletes who shared their experiences and advice on maintaining a healthy lifestyle including Neeraj Chopra (Olympic gold medalist in javelin throw) had revealed that he struggled with excess weight before adopting a disciplined diet and fitness regimen. He encouraged families to engage in outdoor activities together. Nikhat Zareen (World Boxing Champion) called obesity a “national concern” and stressed the importance of taking it seriously by following a healthy lifestyle.

Government initiatives and public response

Following Modi’s call to action, government agencies and health ministries are reportedly working on awareness campaigns to educate people about the dangers of obesity. These efforts align with India’s broader push for preventive healthcare through initiatives like ‘Fit India Movement and Poshan Abhiyan’.

Public response to Modi’s campaign has been mixed. While many have praised the initiative, some critics argue that broader policy interventions—such as regulating processed food industries and improving access to healthier alternatives—are necessary for long-term impact.

With obesity on the rise, Modi’s emphasis on dietary awareness and active living marks an important step toward improving national health. However, experts suggest that tackling obesity requires a multifaceted approach, including:

  • Greater public education on nutrition.
  • Encouraging physical activity through sports and fitness programs.
  • Stricter regulations on processed and high-fat foods.
  • Expanding access to affordable and healthy food options.

By reducing oil consumption and making conscious lifestyle choices, India can take meaningful strides towards better health and a fitter future.
