More than 2.5 million people tuned in to watch Kyle Larson pull off one of the wildest victories of the NASCAR Cup Series season at Talladega Superspeedway.

And despite plenty of criticism surrounding Sunday’s YellaWood 500, NASCAR actually gained viewers compared with last year.

NBC averaged 2.581 million viewers for the Oct. 25 race, according to television figures reported by Sports Business Journal’s Adam Stern. That’s a slight increase from the 2.556 million who watched the same event in 2025.

The difference amounts to approximately 25,000 additional viewers, or about 1%.

It’s a modest gain, but one that stands out given the conversation surrounding Sunday’s race.

NASCAR Talladega TV Ratings Show Year-Over-Year Increase

Talladega’s 2026 audience was particularly notable because of where the race aired.

NBC carried the YellaWood 500 on its main broadcast network, giving NASCAR a larger potential audience than races shown exclusively on cable.

That distinction matters when comparing television numbers across the Cup Series schedule. A race on NBC has a different level of household availability than one on USA Network, making direct comparisons between the two less useful.

Still, the year-over-year comparison at Talladega is straightforward. Both the 2025 and 2026 fall races aired on NBC, and this year’s event attracted a slightly larger audience.

The increase also comes after the 2025 Talladega race suffered a significant ratings decline compared with 2024, when the event drew 3.127 million viewers.

Sunday’s number doesn’t erase that longer-term drop. But it does mark an improvement after last year’s decline.

Talladega’s Ratings Tell a Different Story Than Fan Reaction

The television numbers arrived after a weekend in which fans had plenty to say about the racing itself.

Much of the frustration centered on Stage 1, when drivers spent long stretches conserving fuel instead of racing aggressively in the draft.

RFK Racing took advantage of that approach, sending Chris Buescher, Ryan Preece and Brad Keselowski ahead of the pack in a remarkable breakaway that eventually produced a sweep of the stage’s top three positions.

Some viewers applauded the strategy. Others argued that watching the rest of the field slow down to save fuel was hardly the Talladega racing they wanted.

The final laps delivered a different experience entirely.

A multicar accident sent Joey Logano’s Ford onto its roof, setting up an overtime finish. Larson then made an improbable charge through traffic to beat Hendrick Motorsports teammate William Byron by just 0.041 seconds.

The result was Larson’s first Cup Series victory at Talladega and gave him a 73-point championship lead with two races remaining.

The ratings don’t tell us how viewers felt about the competition, nor do they establish how many people stayed specifically for the finish.

What they do show is that, even with fans debating the quality of the racing, Talladega still attracted a substantial television audience.

For NASCAR, the next challenge is turning that interest into sustained momentum as the championship battle heads to Martinsville and Homestead.
