The Regent Cinema, in Broad Street, made the appeal after finding alcohol containers left behind following a range of screenings, including children’s films.

Management said the issue was not confined to adult audiences, claiming some adults had been bringing alcohol into family screenings while attending with children.

The cinema reminded customers that alcohol consumption is not permitted on the premises and said it is not licensed to sell alcohol.

The cinema said a previously introduced no carrier bag policy had successfully reduced the problem but added that alcohol was beginning to “creep in again”.

The venue warned it did not want to introduce stricter measures, such as preventing customers from bringing any items from outside or carrying out bag searches.

Management said such steps could increase running costs and ticket prices.

The cinema stressed it was not seeking to shame people who choose to drink alcohol but said it was not acceptable to consume it inside the venue.

The cinema said the issue involved a minority of customers but felt it was important to remind visitors of the rules.

The Regent Cinema is housed within the historic Regent Centre, a building originally constructed between 1830 and 1832 as Newtown’s Flannel Exchange.

The landmark later served as public rooms, a post office and the Scala Cinema before being remodelled in Art Deco style and reopening as the Regent Cinema in 1937.

This week’s half-term programme includes Forgotten Island, Ghosts: The Possession of Button House, Wildwood, Street Fighter, Wicker and Clayface.
