‘No breakfast, no lunch’ Shami reveals extreme diet after cricket comeback
Indian speedster Mohammed Shami, known for his fiery spells, has opened up about his incredible fitness journey, revealing that he follows a one-meal-a-day diet to stay in peak shape. Speaking to Navjot Singh Sidhu on Star Sports, Shami said:
“After 2015, I only have one meal a day. I only have dinner, no breakfast, no lunch. It is very difficult to do such a thing, but once you get used to it, then it becomes very easy.”
Now 34, Shami’s journey back to international cricket has been far from easy. Following an injury during the 2023 ODI World Cup Final, he was out of action for almost a year, leading to significant weight gain.
“I have lost nine kgs [during rehabilitation]. The most difficult thing is you have to challenge yourself. When you are in this condition… when I was at the NCA, it was a very difficult phase. My weight was touching 90kgs,” he revealed.
Shami credited his strict discipline and dietary control for helping him regain his fitness, adding:
“The best thing about me is that I do not crave for delicacies. I stay away from sweets. I stay away from a lot of things, things that generally one shouldn’t eat. So, I stay away from them.”
Despite his rigorous routine, Shami admitted to occasional indulgences: “In the case of biryani, sometimes it becomes a cheat meal.”
Shami’s dedication and discipline have already paid off. He made a sensational return to international cricket in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, starting with a five-wicket haul against Bangladesh in Dubai.
With India eyeing another ICC title, Shami’s fitness, experience, and match-winning abilities will be crucial in the tournament, proving once again why he remains one of India’s greatest fast bowlers.
