North Words and Music highlighting “wordplay” in next show on April 9th

Two of the creative minds behind North Words and Music—B.G. Bradley and Marty Achatz—stopped by Public Radio 90’s studios to talk about their upcoming show at Peter White Public Library. This April, the troupe will embrace the theme of “wordplay,” exploring the fun, humor, and deeper meanings behind language.

Bradley, a longtime writer and performer, described the show as a variety showcase featuring local talent, incorporating poetry, storytelling, skits, and an eclectic mix of music. “It’s really about bringing out the light side of life, but you never know what’s going to make it in there,” he said. The upcoming performance will lean into the playful side of language, allowing words to take on unexpected meanings and interactions.

Achatz, a well-known poet and regular contributor to North Words and Music, emphasized the magic of language in poetry. “A poet takes words and combines them in ways you wouldn’t normally expect, which leads to surprises. Words with double or even triple meanings can expand a line’s impact,” he explained. For both Bradley and Achatz, the heart of the show is having fun with words and storytelling—something they’ve enjoyed doing together for decades. “At our age,” Achatz joked, “if it’s not fun, we don’t do it.”

The April 9th show will feature a stellar lineup of local artists, including Big Lake Acoustic, a mother-son duo made up of Linda Smith and Seamus Collins, whose harmonies and song choices always complement the evening’s theme. Also joining the performance will be actress Jacque Love, singer-songwriter John Mallo and the charismatic storyteller Jim Edwards, affectionately known as “Mr. Jim.”

Bradley and Achatz take pride in highlighting local talent. “We don’t need to bring in outside voices to educate us on poetry or music,” Bradley said. “There are plenty of incredible poets, musicians, and actors right here in our community.”
