Kieran McMahon, known for his solo work as well as being a member of The Boundary Parkas, will be playing in pubs, clubs, bars, a car showroom, a tattoo parlour, a dog groomer’s and other venues throughout the borough as he looks to raise money for Dr Kershaw’s Hospice.

The 28-year-old is no stranger to mammoth challenges to raise for the hospice, which has a very special place in his heart.

Kieran, from Saddleworth, was just nine when his mother Joan spent her final days at Dr Kershaw’s as she suffered from breast cancer, and Kieran has never forgotten the amazing work the hospice did at the time and continues to do.

He said: “It was an awful time but it would’ve been so much worse without Dr Kershaw’s.

“I’ve always wanted to do music fundraising challenges to give back.

“The team at Dr Kershaw’s are wonderful, second to none.”

Having done challenges to raise money for the hospice in years past including playing guitar for 100 hours and doing 24 gigs in 24 hours, Kieran’s latest challenge is set to be his biggest yet.

The 100 gigs in seven days challenge, which will begin later this month on November 28, is inspired by fellow Oldhamer Sir Kevin Sinfield as well as Kieran’s musical hero Frank Turner.

Rugby legend and fundraising extraordinaire Sir Kevin has become known for his epic running challenges to raise money for motor neurone disease (MND) charities, while Turner broke the Guinness World Record for the most live music shows played in different cities within 24 hours two years ago.

Discussing the challenge, Kieran said: “I’m really looking forward to it. The support has been great so far – people are really getting behind it and I’ve had tons of messages.”

The challenge will see Kieran play at some unorthodox locations, including Canalside Canines in Uppermill, a car showroom, a hairdresser’s where Kieran plans to get a haircut while playing, and a tattoo parlour, where Kieran says he will get a Frank Turner tattoo as he belts out a song.

The challenge will finish up with a grand finale gig at Shure 5 Studios in Royton on December 5, which Kieran said will be “a right knees-up”.

As part of the challenge, Kieran has released a new song, I Love the North, which he will be playing throughout the challenge along with covers and some Christmas songs.

Tickets will need to be purchased for the finale gig, however Kieran can be spotted playing at many venues across the borough between November 28 and December 5.
