Sarfaraz Khan loses 10 kgs ahead of crucial England tour
Sarfaraz Khan is leaving no stone unturned as he eyes a crucial spot in India’s Test squad for the upcoming tour of England. The 27-year-old batter has undergone a remarkable physical transformation, shedding 10 kilograms through a strict diet and training regimen, reportedly under the close supervision of his father and coach, Naushad Khan.
With India set to face England in a gruelling five-Test series starting June 20, Sarfaraz’s renewed focus on fitness and technique is being seen as a statement of intent. Currently part of the India A squad for two four-day matches against the England Lions, the right-hander knows this could be his golden ticket to earn a regular berth in the national side, especially with two batting slots up for grabs following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
According to a report by India Today, Sarfaraz’s new dietary discipline revolves around a lean, high-protein meal plan, with boiled vegetables and chicken forming the core of his meals. The drastic weight loss has not only improved his agility but also reportedly helped him train more efficiently during his long practice sessions.
What’s more, Sarfaraz has been doubling down on one of the key challenges that overseas conditions handling deliveries outside the off-stump. Practising twice a day, often under tough physical conditions, he’s been simulating English conditions with moving balls and swinging deliveries to fine-tune his approach.
Still waiting for a true test opportunity
Despite making his Test debut earlier this year, Sarfaraz has only featured in six matches so far. But he’s already left an impression, scoring 371 runs with three half-centuries and a commanding century to his name. However, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 passed him by without a single appearance, a frustrating chapter that seems to have only fuelled his desire to break into the playing XI.
With India’s red-ball side in a transitional phase, competition for spots is fierce, but Sarfaraz finds himself in a favourable position. His consistent performances in domestic cricket, coupled with visible improvements in fitness and technique, make him a strong contender for selection.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to announce the official squad for the England series, but a shake-up is expected. Shubman Gill is the frontrunner to take over the Test captaincy, and alongside him, a new-look batting lineup is likely to emerge.
The India A game will be watched closely by selectors and coaching staff, and if Sarfaraz can translate his form and fitness into strong performances, he may well find himself walking out at Lord’s or Headingley later this summer.
