Weight loss story: indian couple staying in hong kong sheds 50 kgs to role model healthy eating habit for 7-year-old son |

For Chinchak Satapathy and Himansu Thakur nothing matters more than their son’s health. The Indian couple who moved from New Delhi to Hong Kong in 2018 decided to adopt fitness after an incident that changed the way they perceived health and wellness.
When the 7 year old son of the couple asked for pizza because he was very stressed, the couple realised that maybe their relationship with food is giving bad lessons to their child.
“I realised that my son had begun associating food with coping with stress” from watching his parents, the mom told South China Morning Post. “I thought, ‘What are we teaching our child’?”

They had put on weight during the COVID pandemic lockdown

“We were stuck at home and found ourselves trapped in a cycle of stress and unhealthy eating. The stress fuelled the unhealthy eating, and the unhealthy eating created more stress,” the mom told the media and added that they were drinking alcohol three to four times a week either socially or alone at home.
“While we were not happy with the way we looked or felt, our friends kept telling us that this was normal, this is how we age. Our life seemed to be stuck at ‘live to eat’,” the husband added.

When they decided to be the ‘best versions’

After the bizarre request by their son, the couple decided to adjust their lifestyle and embark on a journey of wellness. “We wanted to be role models for Ameya. That day we both sat down and asked each other, ‘What can we do to become our best versions?’,” they said.
They had weighed even more – he had reached 110kg and she weighed 72kg – before they tried fad dieting and managed to shed some of it. Now they were committed, the report says.
The husband shed 32 kilos and the wife lost 18 kilos challenging their family history of diabetes and high blood pressure.

What did they do differently?

Our gym time is non-negotiable. We often joke that we ‘got remarried’ in the gym, said Chinchak.
Himanshu loves strength training and is now a certified trainer.
The couple focuses on compound movements such as squats, dead lifts, pull-ups and bench presses. They spend atleast 5 days a week for an hour minimum in the gym.
Along with this they engage in cycling, running and walking for atleast 10,000 steps a day.
They focused on eating more protein, and quantifying the macro and micronutrients including fats and carbs. The couple enjoys healthy foods like shakshuka, guacamole, sourdough bread and oatmeal.
Apart from healthy Indian food for lunch and dinner, the couple also takes protein powder, and Omega 3, vitamin D and magnesium supplements. They rarely drink alcohol and have reduced sugar intake.
“When we see our son filling his plate with protein and vegetables, we feel like winners,” the proud parents said.
