The Great British Bake Off (Channel 4) now has an “Audience Choice” week in which viewers select the challenges. This added little to the show – in fact, it ruined the technical challenge. The wearable bakes of the showstopper were a great idea, but the producers could have come up with that themselves. But perhaps those producers are more focused on some of the contestants’ personal lives than the baking.

Three episodes in, I couldn’t tell you what half of the bakers do in their spare time, but I definitely know that Gabe is a drag queen who lives in a “throuple”. That’s because he likes to mention these things. For the signature challenge, he produced a chocolate and coconut cheesecake inspired by the flavours of a Bounty. “In our little throuple boy band, it’s our go-to,” he explained, begging the presenters to ask him more.

Paul Hollywood politely obliged. “A lot of people call it a throuple. We call it a boy band,” Gabe explained. Paul tried to find some common ground, venturing that he has a TV partner – that’ll be Nigella Lawson – and a home partner. “So you’re in one as well!” trilled Gabe. “No, not quite,” said Nigella, instantly shutting that one down.
