Now, TikTok creator True Crime with Emma has brought renewed attention to the case in an 11-minute video examining the circumstances surrounding Ann’s death and the questions that remain unanswered.
The video, shared on the account @truecrime_withemma, uses photographs of Ann, a vehicle, and the property where she was killed to revisit the decades-old investigation.
It also features images of people connected to the case, which has been the subject of numerous police appeals, investigations and television documentaries over the years.

Ann, a mother of three, had been sunbathing in the garden of her home, situated alongside the A67, on the afternoon of August 3, 1990.
However, at around 6pm, she was discovered dead in a pool of blood in her living room, having suffered a fatal knife attack.
Despite an extensive police investigation spanning more than three decades, nobody has been convicted of her murder.
One of the most significant lines of inquiry concerned reports of a suntanned man, believed to be aged between 35 and 45, who was reportedly seen driving away from the area in a blue car around the time of the killing.
The identity of the man and his possible connection to the murder have remained among the questions surrounding the case.
Ann’s husband, Peter Heron, was arrested and charged with her murder in November 2005, more than 15 years after her death.
However, the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the case around 12 weeks later because of insufficient evidence.
Mr Heron has always maintained his innocence.
Over the years, several other potential leads have emerged, including claims involving escaped life-sentence prisoner Michael Benson and an account from a former shopworker who said she had encountered a sales representative who allegedly confessed to Ann’s murder.
In 1994, The Northern Echo also received letters from an anonymous writer claiming responsibility for the killing.
None of these leads has resulted in a conviction.
The case has continued to attract widespread public attention, including through the Channel 5 documentary The Mysterious Murder of Ann Heron, which examined the circumstances of her death and the long-running investigation.
The latest TikTok video is another example of the case continuing to generate discussion decades after the killing.

The renewed online attention follows an appeal by Durham Constabulary in August 2025, when detectives marked the 35th anniversary of Ann’s death by confirming they were examining evidence using advances in forensic technology.
Officers said the Major Crime Team was continuing to review the investigation, including items recovered from Ann’s home, in the hope that modern techniques could help identify her killer.
“Our Major Crime Team continues to review the case and investigate any new information in the hope of identifying evidence to prove who is responsible.
“I hope this appeal on the 35-year anniversary of Ann Heron’s murder will jog someone’s memory.
“We would urge anyone who might know something from that day, however insignificant they think it might be to come forward and get in touch. It is never too late.
“Ann’s family have been left devastated by what happened – they deserve closure, and we will never give up trying to find who killed her.”
Ann’s son, Ralph Cockburn, also appealed for anyone with information to come forward, saying the family believed there were still people who knew something about what happened.
He said: “My sister Ann Marie and I want to express our gratitude to those who have already come forward with information.
“Your co-operation has been incredibly valuable, and we’ve made progress thanks to you. But we’re not there yet; we need your help to complete the picture.
“I know there are people out there who know something about what happened that day. You might think that the info you have is insignificant, but trust me, even the smallest detail could be a game-changer.
“It might just be that missing puzzle piece we need to finally catch our mum’s killer.”
