Retired US Army General Wesley Clark, a former NATO Supreme Allied Commander, warned Monday, Oct. 19, that President Donald Trump may be seeking to trade Ukraine’s sovereignty for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s cooperation in resolving Washington’s conflict with Iran.

Speaking in an interview with NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas, Clark described the potential arrangement as a “very, very corrupt, dangerous bargain,” warning that US pressure on Kyiv could force Ukraine into capitulation while rewarding Moscow for its aggression.

“If he can cause Ukraine to fail, he delivers Ukraine to Putin,” Clark said.

The retired general suggested Trump might be seeking Putin’s assistance in pressuring Tehran over its nuclear program, while Moscow could demand concessions on Ukraine in return.

“This is a very, very corrupt, dangerous bargain,” Clark said.

“The President of the United States is supposed to be the leader of the free world. He’s got to act like it and not cozy up to Putin.”

Asked whether he believed Putin was offering to help Trump resolve the war with Iran in exchange for Ukraine, Clark replied: “Exactly. That’s exactly what’s coming across.”

Clark offered no direct evidence of such an agreement, presenting the scenario as his interpretation of Trump’s recent actions and diplomatic priorities.

‘We’ve Seen This Play Before: 1938 Munich’

Clark drew a stark historical parallel between the possible Trump-Putin arrangement and the 1938 Munich Agreement, when Britain and France agreed to Nazi Germany’s annexation of Czechoslovakia’s Sudetenland without Czechoslovakia’s participation.

Pope Leo XIV Calls Zelensky After Speaking With Putin to Discuss Russian-Occupied Oleshky Again

Pope Leo XIV discussed the crisis in Russian-occupied Oleshky with Zelensky, three days after urging Putin to allow a humanitarian ceasefire.

“We’ve seen this play before: 1938 Munich. The great powers met with Adolf Hitler,” Clark said.

“They gave up Czechoslovakia, and it didn’t stop World War II.”

Clark argued that ending a war at the expense of an invaded country’s sovereignty would undermine the international principles the United States has historically defended.

“The basic rule of this is you’re the leader of the free world. You go against aggressors,” he said.

“You don’t say the most important thing is to stop a war. It isn’t. The most important thing is to maintain the rights of nations to be free of invasion.”

He also compared the situation to US negotiations over the Vietnam War, arguing that agreements reached without adequately protecting an ally’s interests could lead to disastrous consequences.

Clark Warns US Restrictions Are Leaving Ukraine Exposed

Clark’s warning came amid growing tensions between Kyiv and Washington over Trump’s decision to ease Russian energy sanctions, reported restrictions on satellite communications and delays in delivering critical air defense missiles.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Washington of failing to provide advance intelligence on recent Russian ballistic missile attacks and slowing satellite services used by Ukrainian forces.

During Monday’s interview, Clark said he had witnessed growing concern among European security officials during a recent visit to Warsaw.

“When they realized that we’d cut off the use of Starlink and cut off the intelligence and missiles were falling, 38 missiles in one night hitting around Kyiv,” Clark said, describing the reaction to the reported disruptions.

“They know that President Trump is not the leader of the free world. They think he’s in a corrupt bargain with Vladimir Putin.”

“It really hurts me as an American to have people say that about our president,” he added.

As Kyiv Post previously reported, restrictions affecting Starshield satellite capabilities have disrupted Ukrainian military operations, including the use of interceptor drones against Russian aerial attacks.

Zelensky raised those concerns during a bipartisan congressional call Monday, warning that delays in urgently needed weapons and intelligence were undermining Ukraine’s defenses.

The Trump administration has denied deliberately suspending intelligence-sharing with Kyiv, while US officials have disputed claims that Washington ordered satellite restrictions.

‘How Can You Decide the Fate of Ukraine Without Ukraine?’

Clark also condemned the possibility of a three-way summit involving Trump, Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which could take place during next month’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, China.

The proposed meeting has prompted concerns in Kyiv that the leaders of the US, Russia and China could discuss a settlement to Russia’s war without Ukrainian participation.

“Why is China at the table to decide the fate of Ukraine? And why isn’t Ukraine at the table?” Clark asked.

“How can you decide the fate of Ukraine without Ukraine there?”

Clark suggested that Beijing and Moscow could use such a meeting to pressure Washington into withdrawing further support for Kyiv, presenting Ukraine’s capitulation as a path toward ending the war.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has similarly warned that a summit between Trump, Putin and Xi without Zelensky would encourage Moscow to continue its invasion.
