With 2026 delivering horror bangers like Obsession, Resident Evil, and Send Help, one of the most intense movie experiences in recent years is conquering the streaming charts. No major Hollywood stars, a bleak tone that makes you feel very uncomfortable, and a very distressing ending are some of the things that are still memorable about the 2020 horror thriller that left some viewers reeling. Apparently, audiences are getting in the mood for the spooky season, and they have found a perfect pick in the little-known thriller that a critic said will “leave your mouth almost permanently agape.”

Hunter Hunter tells the story of a family of three living off the grid in the middle of the woods in Canada. When Joseph suspects a wolf is around the area, he decides to hunt the creature in order to protect their livelihood as fur trappers and keep his wife Anne and daughter Renée safe. However, Joseph finds the evidence of a serial killer targeting women, prompting him to search for the perpetrator. Meanwhile, Anne finds a wounded stranger named Lou and decides to take care of him, unaware that he could potentially be the killer on the run. As Lou shows his true nature, Anne fights back and things take a very, very dark turn.

We won’t spoil the ending for Hunter Hunter, even though it’s the film’s most talked-about element. We’d rather just warn those who are faint of heart that the conclusion is unexpectedly gnarly. Seriously, you’ll never be prepared for the one thing that pushes the boundaries of the R-rating standards.

The film stars Devon Sawa (Final Destination), Nick Stahl (Fear the Walking Dead), Camille Sullivan (Shelby Oaks), and Summer H. Howell (2026’s Carrie). The film was written and directed by Shawn Linden. It is an independent production acquired by IFC Midnight, a studio specializing in genre films, which released it in a limited theatrical run before it arrived on digital platforms.

‘Hunter Hunter’ Is a Perfect Halloween Pick – And Audiences Are Catching On

Released in December 2020, Hunter Hunter mostly flew under the radar, only grossing a little over $32,000 during its limited theatrical run. However, it received critical acclaim and eventually earned an impressive 94% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the audience score sitting at 65%. Many noted the film’s strengths, which include its unrelenting tone, effective performances, and, of course, gut-punch ending. Critic Carla Hay wrote the following for Culture Mix: “Hunter Hunter has a relatively small cast, but the movie is big on gradually building suspense, which culminates in a shocking and very gruesome ending … Hunter Hunter doesn’t want to offer easy answers on issues relating to morality or death.”

The unforgettable Hunter Hunter is currently among the most-watched movies on HBO Max. It is at No. 10 on the streamer’s global charts, ranking below classics like Se7en, Speak No Evil (also a very disturbing thriller), and The Silence of the Lambs.
