Designs for the new Hamilton Performing Arts Centre (PAC), Cinema and Gallery include a dramatic reduction in seating for cinema audiences.

It is proposed the new cinema would have 68 seats, down from the 121 currently in place.

Analysis completed by the architect behind the new design shows of the 3,964 cinema sessions per year, only 55 screenings, or 1.39 per cent, attracted more than 68 attendees, with an average of 11 people per session.

Only a small number of screenings each year exceed the proposed new capacity.

Plans are for the cinema to be integrated into the larger Performing Arts Centre, which will include a cinema projector in the existing 500 seat auditorium to ensure it can cater for larger cinema audiences at peak times, such as the school holidays.

Public exhibition of the plans ends on November 11.
