Actor Nana Patekar could play a funny gangster, an angry cop or a deeply serious politician and still somehow leave behind a meme for your next bad day at work, school or in life. That was his particular brand of genius: he did not need to wink at the audience to be funny. He simply delivered the line, made the face and let the internet do the rest.

Patekar died at 75 on October 8 at his Goa residence. Over a career spanning decades, he gave Indian cinema some of its most powerful performances, from the fiery Pratap Narayan Tilak in Krantiveer (1994) to the chaotic comic brilliance of Uday Shetty in Welcome (2007).

But somewhere along the way, Patekar’s deadpan delivery, explosive reactions and wonderfully dramatic dialogue delivery found a second life online. His scenes became meme templates for everything from workplace frustration and relationship drama to everyday adulting woes. Millennials grew up watching him; Gen Z discovered him through memes and both somehow found themselves saying Nana’s lines in situations that had absolutely nothing to do with the original scene.

As tributes pour in, we look back at 7 times Nana Patekar accidentally became the internet’s unofficial spokesperson; saying, with cinematic flair, exactly what the rest of us were thinking.

“Seh lenge thoda” — Welcome

A lot of the memes we still use today come from Welcome (2007), where Nana Patekar’s Uday Shetty looked like a man you absolutely did not want to cross, but secretly dreamt of becoming a Bollywood star. And then came “Seh lenge thoda”, the line that somehow became the unofficial motto of an entire generation dealing with things they really should not have to put up with.

“Control Uday, control” — Welcome

Your manager is annoying you, the meeting has been going on for two hours, and you have an EMI waiting at the end of the month. You cannot exactly say what you are thinking, so you sit there and conduct a silent “Control Uday, control” exercise in your head. Patekar’s exasperated self-control became one of the internet’s favourite ways of dealing with people who test our patience for a living.

“Aloo le-lo, kaanda le-lo” — Welcome

Few things are more meme-worthy than Uday Shetty, dressed impeccably in a suit, suddenly turning into a vegetable vendor and yelling, “Aloo le-lo, kaanda le-lo.” The sheer absurdity of that scene has made it perfect meme material for anyone trying to sell, pitch or promote something in an increasingly competitive world.

Legend Nana Patekar passed away at the age of 75 due to cardiac arrest Remembering all famous dialogues of Nana sir from welcome – Bhagwan ka diya hua sab kuch hai. Daulat hai, shohrat hai, izzat hai bas ek chhoti si kami hai. -Control, Uday control! Control, Majnu control! -Seh lenge thoda. -Saala jalta hai tu mujhse Majnu! -Subah tak ek bhi aloo nahi bika aadha pyaaz bhi nahi! Om shanti Rest in peace legend No actor can come like you and match your versatility— Venky Mama (@venkymama100) October 8, 2026

Corporate presentation, startup pitch or Instagram business; somewhere, an Uday is still selling those potatoes and onions.

“Areh haa haa! Miracle!” — Welcome

Then there was the sheer infectious energy of Uday Shetty’s “Areh haa haa! Miracle!” Matching Akshay Kumar’s manic enthusiasm, Patekar delivered the line with such perfect timing that it became a reaction in its own right. Whether something genuinely miraculous has happened or you are simply pretending to be impressed by your friend’s terrible idea, this one fits.

“Yeh raaz bhi usi ke saath chala gaya” — Welcome

And then there are the bonus Welcome gems that refuse to die. “Yeh raaz bhi usi ke saath chala gaya” became the perfect soundtrack for every forgotten password, unfinished gossip and mystery nobody will ever solve. Patekar did not just deliver a line; he gave the internet a ready-made response for secrets that were never coming back.

RIP Nana Patekar. Died suddenly from unknown causes. Art mimics life and life mimics art. Aditya Gupta (@DrAditya2935) October 8, 2026

And because Uday Shetty apparently had a dialogue for every possible crisis, there is also the evergreen, “Bhagwan ka diya hua sab kuch hai.” Enough said.

“Aa gaye meri maut ka tamasha dekhne?” — Krantiveer

If you thought Patekar’s meme legacy began and ended with comedy, Krantiveer (1994) is here to correct you. Dressed in prison clothes and facing a massive crowd, Nana’s fiery “Aagaye meri maut ka tamasha dekhne?” carries the kind of dramatic intensity that can be applied to almost any personal crisis.

Aa gaye meri maut ka tamasha dekhne sounds so surreal today. He lived on his terms and, till his last breath, detested the Indian masses’ cowardice against corruption and anti-nationalism by some politicians. He was the angry guy of the 1990s that India loved. #NanaPatekarLegend— Avi (A Vishwamitra) (@AfricanShiva) October 8, 2026

Being cornered in a WhatsApp group full of aunties asking when you are getting married? That dialogue. Teacher catches you without your homework? Also, that dialogue. Walk into an office meeting where everyone is waiting to question you? You know what to do.

The dance showdown in Tum Milo Toh Sahi

Nana Patekar did not need a monologue to become meme material. Sometimes, all it took was a poker face and some truly committed physical comedy. In Tum Milo Toh Sahi (2010), his showdown dance with a transgender character asking him for money became memorable for its sheer absurdity and Nana’s impeccable comic timing.

Nana Patekar died today but I will always remember his iconic best scene RIP Margin of Safety (@InvestorOfJAMMU) October 8, 2026

The expression. The movements. The completely straight-faced delivery. It is the kind of scene that reminds you why his comic performances worked so brilliantly, he committed to the bit completely.

“Sorry bol!”- the ultimate argument winner

And finally, a gem for the introverts who have conducted entire imaginary arguments in the shower and won every single one. Patekar’s aggresive “Sorry bol!” is the kind of dialogue you can hear in your head long after the scene is over.

Couples know it. Siblings know it. Anyone who has ever replayed an argument three hours later and thought of the perfect comeback knows it. Patekar gave us the line, the conviction and, most importantly, the confidence to demand an apology, even if the only audience is the shampoo bottle sitting on the bathroom shelf.

Nana Patekar may be gone, but his dialogues are very much alive, waiting to be dropped into the next office rant, family drama or completely unnecessary WhatsApp argument. And honestly, what better legacy could there be?
