Tom Cruise had high hopes for his latest box office release, Digger. However, after receiving lackluster reviews and tanking at the box office during opening weekend, a new report projects that the film is on track to lose $250 million.
According to a Wednesday, October 7 report in The Wrap, Digger will mark Cruise’s biggest loss of his career. The outlet added that previous reports projected the film’s loss at an estimated $125 million. However, after an opening weekend of just $8 million domestically and $21 million globally, that number has since doubled.
An insider at Skydance claimed that Digger is not expected to earn more than $40 million globally, despite costing $173 million to make. An additional $100 million was spent on marketing and Cruise’s global press tour.
The film, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, skipped a traditional film festival premiere and instead held its world premiere in London on September 22. Three days later, Cruise, 64, and González Iñárritu attended a premiere event in Mexico City.
“I prefer that to the lukewarm reception,” the filmmaker told The New York Times, referring to the film’s polarizing reviews.
Iñárritu added, “The movie is not perfect. [But] I like taking risks.”

“I think definitely it’s an uncommon film. It’s a provoking film,” he continued. “That’s the role of a film for me — let’s start the conversation. My personal taste is films that try to tell me something in a different way.”
The Top Gun star is also set to appear in another Skydance film alongside Anne Hathaway, Days of Thunder 2, which is scheduled to start production next year.
