Even though being a celebrity obviously comes with a ton of privilege, there are certain aspects of existing in the spotlight that seem especially tough. And while some people tend to assume that those who have chosen to work in the entertainment industry like being the center of attention, there are many celebrities who dislike dealing with the paparazzi. Calling the paparazzi out for their behavior, however, has proven to be surprisingly controversial (Chappell Roan, in particular, has faced a lot of criticism after confronting paparazzi).
So, when Jennifer Lopez confronted the paparazzi in Paris, it also sparked a debate. Some people even acted like she had no business saying anything about the paparazzi, while others appreciated how poised she seemed.
Jennifer Lopez was bombarded by photographers in Paris.
And instead of merely looking annoyed and moving on, she confronted them and actually lectured them about their behavior. “Guys, can you stop acting crazy?” she said to the photographers, per Page Six.
She essentially told them to chill. “Relax,” she told them. “Nobody’s running anywhere. We’re not doing anything.”
“You can take a quick breath,” she added.
The interaction was pretty divisive.
After clips of what happened started circulating on social media, some of her fans praised her for the way she handled the situation. One fan called her “classy” and “legendary.” Another wrote, “She needs privacy, and she is always so gracious!!”
But critics seemed unconvinced that Jennifer was even bothered by the paparazzi in the first place. They tried to claim that Jennifer “called” or “hired” the photographers for the publicity.
“She calls them and then tells them to back off. Hilarious,” one critic wrote. Meanwhile, another person said, “Of course she doesn’t mind them ‘acting crazy’ when she’s trying to make a buck or promoting something.”
But wanting privacy is totally valid.
While stepping out of her hotel in Paris, Jennifer Lopez stopped to tell photographers to “stop acting crazy” after they followed her to take pictures.

At the height of the Chappell Roan paparazzi discourse, some people seemed to be of the mindset that celebrities go into the entertainment industry knowing that they will have less privacy, so they shouldn’t complain when that turns out to be the case. But knowing that existing in the public eye comes with certain sacrifices is different from tolerating any and all invasive behavior.
This recent incident was not the first time that Jennifer confronted the paparazzi. A few years ago, photographers tried to get photos and videos of her as she was leaving the gym. As she was getting in the car and preparing to leave, she was clearly getting increasingly frustrated. Before getting in the car, she addressed the paparazzi, saying, “F— you. Bye!”
Then, before her divorce from Ben Affleck was actually confirmed, a reporter tried to ask her about the rumors that they were splitting up. Jennifer clearly wasn’t having it, and neither was her Atlas co-star, Simu Liu.
Simu immediately jumped to her defense, saying, “OK, we’re not doing that. Thank you so much, guys. We really appreciate it. Thank you.” Jennifer then chimed in with, “You know better than that.”
