An eavesdropping incident occurred at OpenAI, an artificial intelligence (AI) developer. The culprit was an OpenAI employee who was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) after secretly installing a recording device in a conference room used by executives. Analysts say concerns are growing about the theft of companies’ core technology and security as global competition in AI intensifies.
According to Yonhap News Agency and Bloomberg News on the 14th, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that it had arrested and charged Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national and OpenAI engineer, on the 9th.
Alfozan is accused of installing a recording device in the USB port on the back of a television in an executive conference room inside OpenAI’s San Francisco, California, headquarters last month and eavesdropping on meeting discussions (the interception of oral communications using an electronic device).
Alfozan joined the company last July and began working on the product team. However, he had no reason or authorization to enter the conference room used by executives, yet was seen on closed-circuit television (CCTV) approaching it several times and looking behind the television, raising suspicions. Alfozan has since been fired by OpenAI and is in custody.
FBI Director Kash Patel said, “(Alfozan) is accused of hiding a secret recording device in a conference room to covertly capture sensitive conversations about the company’s superintelligence technology. Protecting innovation in information technology is essential to safeguarding the nation’s economic strength and security, and the FBI considers this one of its highest-priority counterintelligence cases.”
OpenAI continues to face a series of controversies over internal security and information management. On the 9th, it terminated its contracts with three researchers on the safety team, citing the transfer of confidential information to an external AI safety organization. The researchers, who were dismissed, protested that OpenAI had put profits ahead of safety. Last April, Sam Altman’s home nearly became the target of a Molotov cocktail attack.
OpenAI has also previously experienced a data breach in which a ChatGPT system error exposed users’ conversation titles and some payment information, as well as a leak of researchers’ development-related conversations following a hack of its messaging system. Controversy arose at the time over claims that internal warnings about security vulnerabilities had not been properly heeded.
