The Oscar-winning screenwriter says he relies on cinematographers and production designers to strengthen his films

Aaron Sorkin has admitted that he remains uncertain about his abilities as a film director following the disappointing box office performance of The Social Reckoning, saying he fears some of his weaknesses may be impossible to overcome through experience.

The Oscar-winning screenwriter discussed his concerns during an appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, recorded at the Newport Beach Film Festival. His latest film, released in cinemas on October 9, has earned just under $17 million worldwide against a reported production budget of approximately $30 million, according to Variety.

“There’s a big part of me that feels like I just got into the movie business a few minutes ago, and that there’s so much I don’t know,” Sorkin said during the interview.

He explained that while some aspects of screenwriting can be taught, he believes talent also involves qualities that cannot necessarily be learned. He admitted he worries that the same may be true of the directing skills he has yet to master.

Sorkin, 65, made his directorial debut with Molly’s Game in 2017 and has since directed films including The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Being the Ricardos. The Social Reckoning marks his fourth feature as a director.

Despite his experience, he said he was surprised by how little technical filmmaking knowledge he had absorbed over the years. He also described himself as lacking visual instincts, a significant concern in a medium built around images.

Sorkin praised cinematographers and production designers for helping translate his scripts into compelling visuals. He also highlighted David Fincher’s work on The Social Network, describing the director’s ability to make individual frames resemble paintings.

The new film serves as a companion to The Social Network and features Jeremy Strong as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, alongside Jeremy Allen White and Mikey Madison.

Sorkin said he continues to value working with accomplished directors because he learns from their approaches. For his latest project, he relied on his crew to recognise where he needed support and contribute their expertise.
