The clash between the Ministry of the Interior and the Police Headquarters
The Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, has already convened a meeting with the Chief of Police and senior officials from the Ministry of the Interior to take stock of the attacks in the Lombard capital. The Milan Police Commissioner, Bruno Megale, also joined the meeting remotely, and the Minister expressed his gratitude to him for the work of the men and women in uniform who are working to tackle the violence.
The debate is now moving to Palazzo Chigi. Giorgia Meloni has called a summit on public order to examine the management of public spaces and intelligence assessments. The stated aim is to identify further measures against those who exploit legitimate demonstrations to incite violence and chaos.
Expected to attend the meeting, either in person or via video link, are the heads of the security services and law enforcement agencies, Piantedosi, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto and the two Deputy Prime Ministers. The meeting is expected to take place either before or after the one on the budget, scheduled for around 12.30.
Proposed new regulations concerning minors
The age of those involved in the raids is also shaping the political response. The government is considering new legislation on minors, whilst within the centre-right there is talk of a measure along the lines of the Caivano decree, with the realisation that this will require consultation with the Quirinale.
Matteo Salvini has already outlined a course of action: to incorporate certain measures from the security bill – which was passed by the government in mid-July and is now being examined by the Senate – into a decree.
