Maurie’s, a hugely popular sandwich shop in Portswood which has had several viral TikTok videos, is preparing to open a second shop on Malmesbury Road in Shirley.

Phoebe White, 33, who owns the shop with her sister Maisie White, 29, said the new location is “really special” for them because they grew up nearby.

She said: “Everything about Maurie’s is a family-orientated story.

“When this shop became available in Shirley, it was like it just knew what we wanted because it was such a special shop to us.”

Phoebe said the new shop will be “everything amazing about Maurie’s” but will still be it’s own distinct destination, and customers can expect new things from the business.

The new location will be named “June’s” after the sisters’ grandmother, who passed away six months after their grandad, Maurie.

June’s will focus more heavily on baked goods, compared to Maurie’s sandwiches and will feature indoor seating, which the sandwich shop currently doesn’t have.

Phoebe said: “We’re going to do things a little bit differently.

She added: “At June’s you won’t find focaccia. It’s strictly Maurie’s.

“We’re going to do things a little bit differently. It’s a little bit of a secret sandwich-wise.

“We’re going to be doing more of a range of our baked goods.

“We specialise in cinnamon rolls.

“So we’re going to be doing a larger range of cinnamon rolls, including things like our classic pistachio.

“We’ll be doing specials, more savoury cinnamon rolls.”

The store will expand its offerings of brioche, doughnuts, cookies, and twice-baked croissants and baked bread.

Phoebe said renovating the new location has been a labour of love for the family.

She said: “It really needed a lot of work, so it’s been a whole family effort to get it redone.

“We’ve really taken our time on it because we’re trying to preserve the history.”

She said while taking the frontage off, they revealed the “incredible” original windows which have been covered for over 25 years.

Phoebe added: “Everyone who works for us is amazing.

“We’re so blessed with our whole team.”

While an opening date has not yet been confirmed, they hope to welcome customers “soon”.

The team has been balancing the renovation alongside caring for new-borns, after both sisters gave birth this summer.

Phoebe said: “The community around Shirley have been amazing.

“Everyone dropped in and says hello when we’re doing all the building work.

“Everyone’s so excited and we’re really excited to bring some happiness and exciting times to the area.”
