Some people have such unique bath-time practices that they sound outlandish rather than routine, and when those people are celebrities, their unusual or unexpected hygiene habits tend to get flagged for being “extreme.” What does “extreme” mean in the context of showering, though? It depends. Some stars are so concerned about being spotless that they visit the shower multiple times a day. Meanwhile, other celebrities admit they don’t wash every body part, opting instead for an au naturel lifestyle that doesn’t include daily bathing beyond the occasional washcloth, water, and soap treatment.

According to medical professionals, neither approach is always right or wrong. Showering more than a few times a week isn’t always necessary, though there may be instances where one would take two short showers within a day. On the other hand, skipping too many showers also isn’t advisable, because they help keep the skin healthy. If you’re wondering where your showering cadence falls, you may want to gauge your own “extremeness” against the scrub-down habits of the following five famous faces.

Tommy Lee prefers to wait for days to shower

How long could you go without getting into a shower? If you’re musician Tommy Lee, you’d be fine with only showering once a week. Lee’s wife, Brittany Furlan Lee, spilled the beans on his bathing preferences while on the “Off the Vine with Kaitlyn Bristowe” podcast in late 2024, adding that Lee wasn’t raised to shower daily. “He said growing up, his mom, like, that’s a thing in Europe,” she said. “You don’t need to shower every day. They would just do the white washcloth if they felt like they were getting a little funky.”

The podcast was uploaded to YouTube, and reactions were mixed about the hardcore rocker’s not-so-secret shower routine. One commenter kept it simple: “That’s gross.” Another gave some clarification: “I can assure you honey – we DO shower in Europe – that’s just him.” However, others found the revelation to be kind of “meh,” with a poster stating, “Seniors don’t shower that often.” (Lee was 62 years old at the time.)

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson keeps himself spotless

For actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the shower is a place to visit three times a day. In 2021, he described himself on X as “the opposite of a ‘not washing themselves’ celeb.” First, it’s a cold shower in the morning; then, it’s a warm shower after he exercises; and, finally, it’s a hot shower after work. Aside from sounding like a recipe for a high water bill, The Rock’s showering routine may be a little rough on his body, depending upon how long he hangs out under the stream.

When asked by Men’s Health to comment on The Rock’s frequent showering, dermatologist Adam Friedmann admitted that although it wouldn’t be necessary for everyone, it’s likely what works best for the star. “I understand The Rock’s bathing [regimen] is led by his busy workout schedule,” said Dr. Friedmann, adding that The Rock was being smart by turning down the temperature most of the time, since hot water can dry out the skin.

Julianne Hough jokes that she’s a clean freak

Every shower that dancer Julianne Hough takes sounds like a bit of a production, at least in terms of how much she shaves. Hough takes shaving cream and a razor to herself every time she showers, and she’s kept the regimen for decades. In fact, Hough has said that she started imitating her sisters’ shaving practices when she was really young.

“I’ve been shaving my entire body — like my arms, too — since I was eight,” she explained to Marie Claire in 2026. During the same conversation, she jokingly referred to herself as a “hairless clean freak.” Reading between the lines, this means her showers may take more time than the U.S. average of 16.1 minutes, as a 2024 Harris Poll survey found. But at least she doesn’t leave her skin terribly thirsty for moisture, particularly during wintertime. Instead, she told Us Weekly in 2015, “I lather myself up with baby oil in the shower.”

Ashton Kutcher doesn’t seem to take conventional showers

Of all the confessions about showering, actor Ashton Kutcher may have one of the boldest: He doesn’t do it. Or, if he does, he barely touches the bulk of his body. During a 2021 appearance on the “Armchair Expert” podcast, Kutcher admitted that he washed his groin and armpits daily, but that’s all. In other words, he seemed to be hinting that he basically takes the equivalent of sponge baths. With that said, Kutcher clarified his statement during a 2026 People interview, explaining that he honestly does shower.

Is Kutcher just playing games with his shower-habit claims? Maybe, but many doctors say it’s okay to skip showering as long as you’re hitting the three body parts you need to wash every day: under the arms, the private parts, and the feet. Kutcher hasn’t mentioned if he cleans off his feet, but at least he’s getting (or used to get) two-thirds of the way toward a medically acceptable self-cleaning.

Ashley Benson blames her hometowns for her four-times-a-day showers

Living part-time in both Los Angeles and New York City leaves Ashley Benson showering multiple times daily. She points to her “humid and gross” urban living for making her miserable during a 2018 interview with Yahoo! Lifestyle. “I’m just sweating all the time,” she complained. Benson finds relief in showering, which she does up to four times a day. She also gushed about using specific body wash products. She raved about them on a now-unavailable Instagram post, reportedly stating that they make her “want to stay in the shower a little longer!”

Is it a healthy idea for Benson to wash off every time she works out or walks outside for a city stroll? Perhaps not. Dermatologists like Dr. Joel Spitz seem to agree that fewer showers are better for the skin. As Spitz noted to USA Today, “Long, hot showers will definitely worsen dryness and increase itch.” That said, he advised that people like Benson who can’t stop taking multiple daily showers should make sure their showers are cool and fast to minimize any skin irritation.
