One of FC Barcelona’s domestic rivals is thinking about possibly snatching away a Blaugrana first team star according to SPORT, which cited a Superdeporte report that used anonymous sources.

Eric Garcia was picked up by the La Masia academy in the late 2000s, but turned professional at Manchester City.

In 2021, though, Ronald Koeman brought him back to Catalonia on a free transfer ahead of the center back enjoying an impressive loan spell at Girona last term, and helping Barca’s regional neighbours achieve Champions League qualification for the first time in its history.

Injuries suffered by Marc Bernal, Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen meant that current manager Hansi Flick insisted on Eric staying put despite the player intending on leaving to earn more minutes elsewhere ahead of ongoing 2024/2025 campaign.

Even though the sick list has grown in length in both defence and midfield where Eric can operate, however, Eric has still been used sparingly by Flick.

He has accumulated just 448 minutes across nine games at an average of 50 minutes per match, with six of those outings in midfield as the centre of the back line remains occupied by an impressive duo of Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez.

Aware of his situation at the Montjuic Stadium, Real Sociedad is closely monitoring it according to Superdeporte.

Eric would be a “strategic signing” for La Real according to the same outlet, and Barca could look to sell Eric next summer.

This is because the 23-year-old’s contract expires on June 30, 2026 meaning that the transfer window that opens in the lead up to the 2025/2026 season will be the last that Barca has to sell him for a fee.

Otherwise it risks losing for free a player that evidently has a market, and Eric will be free to negotiate with whoever he wishes from January 1, 2026 onwards.

Eric walking for nothing wouldn’t be the end of the world given he also returned to Barca free of charge earlier this decade.

As the club still recovers from its well-documented economic problems, however, and looks to return to the 1:1 rule under Financial Fair Play limits, it would be a misstep not to spin a profit on players in such predicaments if possible.

In November, La Real could get a closer look at Eric as Flick plans to use him in rotations expected when Barca has three big games in 12 days to contest starting with Espanyol and Sunday and concluding with a trip to the Basque region.
