Revenue jumped to roughly $17 billion in the third quarter, but compute costs and a donation-matching charge erased the prior quarter’s profit

Anthropic just showed public-market investors what its books look like a few weeks before its planned debut. The picture is complicated.

The Claude developer’s amended Form S-1 with the SEC reports a $567 million operating loss for the third quarter of 2026. One quarter earlier, the company posted a $974 million operating profit.

That is a swing of more than $1.5 billion in three months. It arrives while Anthropic plans to price its IPO in mid-November, so prospective shareholders now have to decide which quarter tells the real story.

What flipped the profit into a loss

The reversal is largely attributed to two cost lines, according to the filing.

The first is compute. Anthropic’s compute costs surged by around $5 billion. Training and running frontier AI models requires enormous fleets of specialized chips, and that bill keeps growing alongside demand.

The second is a non-cash charge of $2 billion tied to the company’s employee donation-matching scheme. Non-cash means no money actually left the building in that quarter. It still hits the income statement, though, and it was large enough to matter.

Revenue is doing its part

Third-quarter revenue came in at approximately $17 billion. That figure is up 47% from $11.555 billion in the second quarter.

The year-over-year comparison is even more dramatic. Revenue in the same quarter a year earlier was $1.382 billion, which puts the growth rate at 1,127%.

Across the first nine months of 2026, revenue totaled $33.24 billion.

The bigger numbers below the operating line

The operating loss is the headline figure, but it is not the largest number in the document.

Anthropic reported a third-quarter net loss of $23.3 billion. For the nine-month period, the net loss reached roughly $104 billion.

Most of that figure comes from accounting rather than operations. More than $94 billion stems from non-cash fair-value charges on convertible notes and related instruments.

Convertible notes are debt that can turn into equity. When a company’s valuation climbs sharply, the value of those conversion rights climbs too, and accounting rules require the company to book that increase as a loss.

Anthropic disclosed total compute and infrastructure purchase and lease commitments of $895.4 billion.

Of that, $69.8 billion comes due within 12 months of September 30, 2026. For comparison, that near-term obligation alone is more than double the company’s nine-month revenue.

How the filing got here

Anthropic first filed its S-1 on October 26. The amended version followed on November 2.

The company plans to list on Nasdaq under the ticker ANT. Pricing is planned for mid-November.
