The weekend box office estimates are in and DC Studios’ first foray into horror, Clayface, has done what many thought it couldn’t and topped the box office. The film opened in a tiny notch under the widely reported studio estimate of $45M, with current estimates putting the film at $43M worldwide.
In the US, Clayface was able to best the second weekend of mega-hit documentary You Can See Everything, topping the charts with a reported $24.5M. That figure is once again a touch under the studio estimate of $25M but could shift when final numbers are published later today. As we reported over the weekend, the James Watkins-directed DC Studios release arrived in cinemas with an impressive A- CinemaScore from audiences. That score is hoped to translate into strong word-of-mouth and continued business in the coming weeks.
Internationally, Clayface amassed $19M from 76 territories. As detailed by Deadline, international grosses so far reported are: here in the UK ($2.6M), Australia ($1.3M versus $1.1M), France ($1.2M) and Brazil ($879K vs. $751K), Mexico ($1.4M to $1.9M), Italy ($873K vs $2.2M), Spain ($721K vs. $986K), UAE ($626K versus $658K), Saudi Arabia ($561K versus $601K) and Taiwan ($404K vs. $424K). Clayface also grossed $593K in Germany and $589K in Korea.
As has also been widely reported, the film was produced on a budget of around $44M before marketing costs. Whilst we do not know the exact amount required for the film to become profitable, it seems the path to profitability looks positive at this stage.

In our four star review of the film Neil says “Brave, bloody and anchored by a magnetic Tom Rhys Harries. Clayface doesn’t always go for the throat, but as a comic book and body horror hybrid it’s certainly memorable one.”
