The latest Godzilla movie is making a massive splash at the box office. While everyone expected Godzilla Minus Zero to be a big hit, no one anticipated that it would be just as successful as it is. Now, after just a few days in theaters, the film is already breaking global box office records.
Godzilla Minus Zero is officially the biggest domestic opening of all time for an international film, earning $31.6 million in the United States and Canada. It breaks the record previously set by its predecessor, Godzilla Minus One, in 2023. This is also enough to make it the first Japanese-produced Godzilla film to reach No. 1 at the domestic box office. The Toho film is projected to make $63 million in its opening weekend, factoring in international markets.
Godzilla Minus Zero‘s box office success comes after rave reviews that hold the sequel on par with its critically acclaimed predecessor. It currently holds a 90% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 96% from audiences (the first film got a 99% from critics and a 98% from audiences). This has been a terrific start for the film, which was produced for an estimated $13 million. Even if Godzilla Minus Zero has a massive drop-off in its second weekend, it is already a financial success and on track to surpass the original movie’s $116 million total gross.
What Does Godzilla Minus Zero’s Box Office Mean for the Franchise’s Future?
Ahead of Godzilla Minus Zero‘s release, director/writer Takashi Yamazaki confirmed that he hopes to direct a third Godzilla film. So far, Toho has not announced any such project, keeping the franchise on a case-by-case basis. The strong box office numbers for the most recent film would almost certainly nudge the Japanese film studio in the right direction, practically confirming that another sequel is coming someday soon.
In the meantime, there is still plenty more Godzilla action on the horizon. The Monsterverse officially returns next year with Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, a highly secretive installment of the fan-favorite creature feature franchise that is set for a March 2027 release. Legendary has yet to release a trailer or even confirm plot details beyond the film’s cast and main monsters. Now that Godzilla Minus Zero is in theaters, however, a trailer is almost certainly coming soon.
Godzilla is also very likely to appear in upcoming seasons on Apple TV’s monster-centric television universe. A prequel to Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is in development with Wyatt Russell reprising his role as a young Lee Shaw. A third season of Monarch is also rumored to be in development, though an official announcement is still pending. Since Godzilla was a pivotal part of previous seasons, it’s safe to assume that he would show up in both of these shows.
