Netflix’s East of Eden adaptation hasn’t even been out for a month, but is already a massive hit. The streaming platform’s take on the classic John Steinbeck novel was just one of three TV shows to cross a major milestone in terms of viewers on Nielsen’s latest charts.
The latest Nielsen charts for the week between Oct. 5 and 11 have been revealed and are a huge boost for Netflix. Not only is its new thriller miniseries Below the second-most-watched project with 1.18 billion minutes, but East of Eden is just a bit behind and is third-most-watched for the week, with over 1.16 billion minutes viewed.
East of Eden Is Often Considered One of the Greatest American Novels Ever
While it is huge news for Netflix, it’s even bigger news for East of Eden, specifically. The chart tracks data from the show’s second week on Netflix, and shows it got even bigger after it premiered. East of Eden originally debuted with 782 million minutes viewed, but jumped up 39% the next week, and was one of just three shows to hit over 1 billion minutes watched as a whole (Carrie finished first with 1.26 billion).
The new Netflix show adapts Steinbeck’s legendary 1952 novel, a family saga that is often considered Steinbeck’s most ambitious work ever. While many consider Steinbeck’s books Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath better, with the latter often heralded as one of America’s greatest novels, Steinbeck actually thought otherwise. Steinbeck famously considered East of Eden to be his masterpiece, and called everything he had worked on before the novel “practice” for it.
East of Eden follows the story of two families, the Trasks and the Hamiltons, and the lives they lead during the mid-1860s, all the way through the early 1910s. The story is largely set in the Salinas Valley of California, and covers themes like greed, power, love, and more as the families live out their own version of the American dream in the West. Despite becoming an instant bestseller, Steinbeck’s novel was criticized by many at the time for its brutal look at family life, as well as its portrayal of violence and sex.
The Netflix adaptation of the book comes from Zoe Kazan, the granddaughter of Elia Kazan (born Elias), a legendary producer and director from the early days of Hollywood. Coincidentally, Elia also worked on an adaptation of East of Eden, directing the 1955 film version of the movie that starred James Dean, Julie Harris, and Raymond Massey. Unlike her grandfather’s work, the new East of Eden features some big changes from both Elia’s version and even the original novel, using things like flashbacks and other visual tools to help viewers understand the story better.
The miniseries features an all-star cast, led by Florence Pugh, Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, Hoon Lee, and Ciarán Hinds. Recurring stars for the show include Joseph Zada, Joe Anders, Martha Plimpton, Tracy Letts, Robert Morgan, and more. Following its release, both critics and audiences praised the show. Besides its stellar streaming numbers, East of Eden also holds an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 85% audience score.
East of Eden Is One of Many Popular Netflix Adaptations
While East of Eden scratches the itch of life in the early West of the United States, Netflix has tons of adaptations of other popular work spanning across all genres. For those looking for something similar to East of Eden, Netflix premiered a Little House on the Prairie adaptation earlier this year, based on the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Unlike East of Eden, which is a limited series, Little House on the Prairie has Season 2 on the way.
Other popular adaptations from Netflix include series like Wednesday, based on The Addams Family and perfect for the Halloween season, or Bridgerton, another series similar in tone to East of Eden and one that’s become a major success for Netflix. Heartstopper, which features three seasons of a miniseries as well as a feature-length finale film, is also available to check out in its entirety.
East of Eden is currently available to stream on Netflix.
