Warner/DC Studios’ Clayface, the studio’s first theatrical release since the Skydance Corporation merger, topped the weekend box office with $43 million in global ticket sales, including $24 million across North American screens.

The movie, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the title roleas an adversary of Batman with a malleable clay-like body from a scientific experiment gone wrong, had a $40 million production budget, excluding marketing.

“This is very good opening for a story rooted in DC Comics’ superhero universe, but with a horror storyline,” analyst David A. Gross with FranchiseRE, wrote in a post.

A24 documentary You Can See Everything, about jailed tech entrepreneur, remained at hit at No. 2, upping first weekend ticket sales to around $20 million — up 28% from $15.6 million and $45.1 million total in 10 days.

Fathom Entertainment/Laika Studios’ stop-motion animation Wildwood, finished No. 3 over the weekend with $11 million domestically, adding an additional $3 million across foreign screens.

“This is a very good opening for a new animated film from outside of the studio development and distribution system,” added Gross. “Audiences love this movie, but it needs a very long run to recoup its costs.”

Paramount’s former chart topper, Street Fighter, added $8.6 million in second-weekend ticket sales for 4th place over the weekend. The movie has generated almost $47 million across North American screens and $80 million globally.

Olivia Colman-starrer Wicker, bowed No. 5 with $5.75 million after being acquired at Sundance by Black Bear Entertainment for $2.5 million.

“This is a very good opening for a new animated film from outside of the studio development and distribution system,” said Gross. “Audiences love this movie, but it needs a very long run to recoup its costs.”
