Kyiv – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday raised the possibility of holding a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the United States and Russia on the sidelines of the G20 summit scheduled to be held in the United States next December, or in one of the Middle Eastern countries, as part of the options being considered to discuss developments in the war.
Zelensky said that holding the meeting in the United States in conjunction with the G20 summit is one of the possibilities, but noted that there has been no confirmation yet from Washington or Moscow regarding the possibility of holding the meeting.
The G20 summit is among the options being considered
The Ukrainian president explained that the international summit could provide an opportunity to hold a meeting that brings together the three parties, in light of the ongoing war and efforts to discuss ways to deal with its repercussions.
The G20 summit is scheduled to be held in the United States next December, amid anticipation of potential political meetings on the sidelines of the official gatherings.
Lack of US and Russian confirmation
Despite Zelensky raising the possibility of holding the meeting, neither the American nor the Russian side has announced its agreement to participate, which keeps the idea among the possible options so far, without an announced agreement on the date, place or agenda of the meeting.
The Ukrainian president’s statement reflects the proposal of more than one geographical route for hosting the meeting, between the United States and the Middle East, without disclosing further details regarding the contacts related to organizing it.
The Ukrainian war is at the forefront of diplomatic efforts.
This proposal comes at a time when political efforts related to the Russian-Ukrainian war are continuing, amid interest in the possibility of direct or indirect contacts between the parties involved.
According to Reuters, Zelensky did not confirm that the trilateral meeting would take place, merely mentioning the options under consideration. Whether the meeting will actually be held depends on the positions of Washington and Moscow, and whether an agreement can be reached on holding it during the G20 summit or at another location in the Middle East.
