If a series of mundane statistics, records, who-won-what and where-was-it-played questions come to your mind when you hear “sports quiz”, you have definitely not been to a truly entertaining one. On October 2, The Bengal Club hosted the sixth edition of its Pub Quiz, and this time, the questions were themed around sports. Held at The Huddle, where most of the club’s Pub Quizzes usually take place, every round of this edition of the quiz was as informative and entertaining for passionate sports enthusiasts as it was for those who are not too well-equipped with sporting knowledge.

The quiz included a set of written questions, during which the six participating teams with three members each would have to jot down the answers to each question displayed on the screen, and then exchange their papers with the team immediately next to them to tally their final points. Verbal rounds were also conducted, in which questions were directly put to each team, on failing to answer which the opportunity to earn points would go to another team. The most unique aspect of the quiz was its dynamic array of questions, which, although based on athletic cues, incorporated elements of pop culture, literature, socio-political history, and more topics which appealed to audiences beyond the overarching area of sports.

Ratan Postwalla, Satadru Banerjee and Aditya Lahiri were the champions of the evening with 125 points, very closely followed by Ravi Asthana, Ishan Ganguly and Abhishek Kejriwal, who secured the position of runners-up, with 120 points.

“The evening had an excellent community vibe — strangers became teammates, and our regular quizzers felt part of a tradition. A pub quiz is ultimately about belonging, not winning. We set a mix of questions that kept every table leaning in — easy ones to warm up, medium ones to test the room, and those  ‘aha!’ moment questions that keep people engaged and wanting more. The questions spanned music, visuals, connections, lists, puzzles and trivia. And throughout, we tried to hold the tone steady — warm, witty, and always encouraging,” said quizmaster Prasenjit Guha.

“For the sixth edition of the Pub Quiz, we challenged ourselves by having a sports-themed quiz which can be enjoyed by a person with no sports knowledge or interest as such. We sifted across various sporting disciplines and then interlinked them with literature, history, geography, music, movies, pop culture, current affairs and so on to curate a set of carefully worded questions which would appeal to the participants and at the same time, hold the audience’s attention and keep them entertained. Looking back at today’s evening, I think we have been somewhat successful in achieving that. A wonderful evening of camaraderie, cerebral thinking and loads of fun and friendly banter sums up what Pub Quizzes at The Bengal Club are all about,” said quizmaster Surya Deep Roy.
