Florida State University will shift to remote classes and work Friday morning before canceling classes and suspending normal business operations as Hurricane Isaias approaches the region.

FSU’s Tallahassee campuses — including the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering — will operate remotely from 8 a.m. to noon Friday, Oct. 9. Beginning at noon, the university will cancel classes and suspend normal business operations for the remainder of the day.

FSU’s Coastal and Marine Lab in St. Teresa will close Friday, Oct. 9.

Essential business operations will continue on campus. Employees designated as on-site essential personnel should consult with their supervisors regarding work expectations and scheduling. Salaried employees whose job duties cannot be performed remotely and who are not designated as on-site essential personnel will be granted administrative leave.

FSU said Human Resources will provide detailed timekeeping instructions Thursday.

Students should check Canvas regularly for updates and instructions from their instructors. Campus housing and dining operations will continue throughout the weather event, with additional support facilities available during limited hours. Many events scheduled for Friday and throughout the weekend will be canceled. Attendees should check event calendars and contact event sponsors for more details.

FSU expects to resume classes and normal business operations Monday, Oct. 12.

University officials continue to closely monitor developments and remind everyone to review the FSU Emergency Preparedness Guide when preparing for possible severe weather. Individuals are strongly encouraged to monitor local forecasts — particularly before traveling — and to follow the guidance of local and state officials.

According to the National Weather Service, gusty winds, heavy rainfall, coastal flooding, and dangerous surf and rip currents are possible beginning Friday.
