A medical drama starring Marcella‘s Anna Friel has just found a streaming home in the UK. Created by Dan Edwards and Kelsey Munro, Aussie drama The F Ward follows a group of medical interns sent to an underfunded and understaffed hospital where they’re put through the wringer.

Friel stars as Dr Gloria Wall, with the cast rounded out by Ioane Sa’ula as Jimmy Seufale, Daniel Wyllie as Dr Curtis Parker, Lola Bond as Ellie O’Neill, Alex Fitzalan as Josh Wilson, and Emily Barclay as Lisa Juracek.

The F Ward is currently available to stream on Channel 4, where all six episodes can be streamed right now.

Reviews of the show have been mostly positive, with ScreenHub arguing that, despite occasionally leaning into the unavoidable clichés of a medical drama, The F Ward “does a solid job of establishing its own identity across the six episodes”.

Elsewhere, The Age praised the series for “its malady of medical issues” that’s not too ‘cliché or convoluted’, adding that the show is “graphic but not gory”, making it a good watch even for those who aren’t into their dose of gut-spilling surgeries.

TV Tonight celebrated the show’s character study, writing: “In between sex, drugs and rock & roll surgery there are likeable characters, power games, secrets and failures.”

The Post New Zealand echoed the sentiment, writing in their review: “For all of its sense of deja vu and melodrama over attention to medical detail, there’s enough engaging characters and banter for this to provide a likeable enough diversion.”

Meanwhile, The Guardian wrote that the show is “missing an essential ingredient” and comes across as “familiar-looking and broadly plausible but infused with an air of unreality”.

Over at IMDb, viewers have been loving “every second” of The F Ward, with one fan calling it “funny and addictive” and a second person branding the show “stunningly good” and “highly original”.

The F Ward is streaming on Channel 4.
