The Australian box office has officially crossed $1 billion this year, the first time the feat has been accomplished since 2019.
Val Morgan confirmed the news on Tuesday, which was led by a number of record-breaking weekends in 2026.
It began in February when the Valentine’s Day weekend had its biggest weekend since 2016 thanks to Australian stars Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi’s “Wuthering Heights,” and the box office went on to post five consecutive $100 million months from April to August.
May had its biggest ever month this year, racking up $119 million, and surpassing May 2019 by 26%. Meanwhile, the release of “The Odyssey” and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” in July, broke all kinds of numbers.
Upon its release on July 16th, Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” clinched the biggest opening weekend of 2026 (debuting with $13.44 million), before “Spider-Man” somehow beat that when it hit cinemas on July 30th (debuting with $30.4 million).
According to Sony Pictures, it also is the biggest box office result ever recorded on a Saturday ($9.3 million) and a Sunday ($8.18 million).
Both films have stormed into the top 10 highest-grossing Australian films of all time, while “The Odyssey” is also the biggest IMAX film ever.

Other impressive highlights this year include horror hits like “Backrooms,” “Obsession,” and “Resident Evil.”
“Crossing $1 billion is a landmark for Australian cinema. It’s been driven by audiences of every age turning up again and again, across every genre, for the kind of shared, can’t-miss experiences you don’t get anywhere else,” Guy Burbidge, Managing Director at Val Morgan Cinema, said.
“For brands, that’s the plot twist not to miss. Cinema delivers an engaged audience on the biggest screen there is, and that audience is growing.
“What’s next? All roads lead to December where, within just 24 hours of each other and a week out from Christmas, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Dune: Part 3’ land in cinemas. Brace yourselves for a cultural moment for the ages, with many more records smashed.”
