MICROSOFT offered buyouts to roughly a quarter of its employees last week, or about 60,000 people.

This follows layoffs of 2% of its workforce in July, and the company’s first-ever voluntary retirement offer to 7% of employees in April.

Microsoft appears to be creating fiscal room for the US$170bil it’s spending on capital projects this year, much of it on data centres for artificial intelligence (AI).

Paying people to leave is the decent way to shrink a company, and fits the gentler culture that Microsoft chief executive officer (CEO) Satya Nadella has worked to instil.

• Microsoft announced voluntary buyouts for about 60,000 employees – roughly 25% of its workforce – following a 2% layoff in July and a 7% voluntary retirement offer in April, aiming to free cash for its $170 billion AI and data‑centre spending plan.

• The buyout formula rewards longer tenure (up to 39 weeks of pay), meaning many senior, experienced staff – the very talent needed to develop and oversee AI systems – are the most likely to accept the offer.

• A Harvard study of 65 million workers found that firms adopting generative AI cut junior hiring by 9% while senior employment continued to rise, suggesting that retaining experienced employees is critical for AI success; Microsoft’s approach runs counter to this trend.

• Analysts warn that shedding senior talent could undermine Microsoft’s AI ambitions, as experienced staff are essential for evaluating and guiding AI outputs, and similar missteps at rivals like Meta have already delayed AI‑related productivity gains.
