The CFDA Fashion Awards has delivered some of the industry’s most memorable red carpet moments, from Rihanna’s barely there, crystal-covered Adam Selman gown in 2014 to Zendaya’s custom Vera Wang look in 2021. Unlike other award shows, the evening puts American designers at the center of the conversation, with celebrities providing a global stage for their work. Monday night was a case study in American fashion.
The red carpet showcased how celebrities and designers translated runway looks into red carpet winners. Among them was Allison Janney in a pink dress with statement bell sleeves from Christian Siriano’s spring 2027 collection. “I think he is the most talented designer and we have fun together,” Janney said about her collaboration with Siriano. “He made my dress for the opening night of ‘Other Desert Cities,’ which is gorgeous,” the award-winning actress added.

The night’s womenswear designer of the year winner, Rachel Scott, dressed Indya Moore in a beautiful textured, voluminous delight. “Well, it’s an interpretation of a dress we did in spring 2027. The whole collection was really about a woman who existed across time in the Caribbean, which Indya is a perfect embodiment of,” Scott told WWD on the red carpet. When Moore was asked how the garment made them feel, they quickly replied, “I feel like a sunflower in this dress. My intention is to grow toward the light.” I suppose we all want to feel that way, so mission accomplished.

Awkwafina in a black column dress with an embellished neckline by Jason Wu was another red carpet winner of the night. “I met Awkwafina like two weeks ago at the Museum Gala, and we just became friends,” Wu recounted about their meet-cute. Awkwafina quickly added, “When I met him, I didn’t realize it was him. I thought, who is this young guy right here? We shared some good times. He’s a legend. It’s such an honor to be dressed by an Asian designer that I’m a fan of.” When Wu was asked about the dress, he simply replied, “We decided to go chic for the CFDA.” And chic it was, but it also proved that real connection between designers and muses is where the real magic lies.

When it came to the men, Matt Damon led the way in a traditional double-breasted, shawl-lapel tuxedo layered over a black turtleneck by Ralph Lauren. “I just love the clothes. I always have,” Damon said about the iconic American designer. “I wore Ralph Lauren for many of the ‘Odyssey’ premieres throughout the summer. I just love the way the clothes feel and the way they look. I just feel great when I’m in them.”
