Plans have surfaced to install battery energy storage systems (BESS) at 16 substations in eight Peruvian regions under a US$420mn project to improve subtransmission reliability and promote the integration of renewable energy.
The substations, located in Ancash, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, JunÃn, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Piura and Tumbes, are operated by distributors that belong to Grupo Distriluz, information from investment promotion agency ProInversión shows.
The project also aims to optimize power supply and manage electricity demand efficiently.
The initiative would be carried out as a self-financed public-private partnership and is in the formulation phase to determine its feasibility before it is promoted.
According to a preliminary timetable, a call for bids is penciled in for the fourth quarter of 2027.
Celaris Energy has said that the planned addition of 4.5GW of new renewable capacity in Peru could create a need for between 300MW and nearly 1GW of BESS.
