A restaurant’s relaxed approach to outside food has attracted widespread attention after a woman documented her wife bringing noodles from a neighboring business into the restaurant where they were already eating.

Rather than objecting, the restaurant in China reportedly provided her with a bowl for the food, prompting commenters to compare the experience with restaurant policies in other countries.

Amie, known online as Amie In China, is a British content creator whose videos largely focus on her frequent trips to China and her life with her Chinese wife. She also works as a travel guide and regularly shares advice for people visiting the country, along with observations about everyday life and cultural differences.

One of Amie’s latest viral videos highlighted an experience that surprised many of her viewers.

While the couple was dining at one restaurant, Amie’s wife purchased noodles from the business next door and brought them back to eat. Instead of asking her to remove the outside food, staff provided her with a bowl to use.

The video garnered 5.1 million views on Instagram in roughly a month, along with tens of thousands of likes and hundreds of comments.

“POV: Your Chinese wife bought her noodles from the shop next door, and the owner not only allows it but gives her a bowl to eat it from,” Amie writes in her video.

The video itself starts with Amie filming her wife as she takes a plastic bag of noodles out of another plastic bag, as a trending Kevin McLeod audio plays.

A bowl is sitting next to the bag, in front of Amie’s own full bowl. Amie’s wife places the bag inside the empty bowl, wrapping it around the bowl’s edge to secure it.

As she does this, the freshly cooked, steaming noodles are revealed, and Amie’s wife prepares to eat them, chopsticks ready in her hand. Amie films her wife’s bowl a little closer, and the video ends.

“Bringing ‘outside food and drink’ to restaurants is considered VERY normal in China, and no one blinks an eye!” Amie writes in the caption, “This shop owner not only allowed it, but gave my wife a bowl so she could eat her ‘outside noodles’ with me (I ordered from the shop).”

“China is so refreshing sometimes!!!! LOVE this ,” she concludes, adding that the video was filmed in February 2026.

In the comments, people talked about how they considered that to be rude, and others pointed out that eating hot food out of a plastic bag is dangerous.

Others, however, expressed that they thought this was a nice gesture, with some comparing it to similar attitudes in other Asian countries.

Because of her video’s virality, Amie made a follow-up video, where she responded to the people who judged her wife for bringing outside food to a restaurant.

“In the West, we’re thinking this is rude, this is uneducated, you shouldn’t bring outside food to a restaurant,” she says, “but in China it is just not that way.”

“When you sit in a restaurant in China, you will even see delivery drivers coming in to the restaurant to find their clients,” Amie says, “who are sat there eating the restaurant food, but who have ordered other things, like maybe a drink from outside,” she explains.

“Chinese people, when they see us in the West, like, restricting what you can bring and how you eat,” she says, “they view that as, like, a restriction on people and people’s rights.”

“Our home country is not the default for the whole world,” Amie says, “just because you think something is rude, just because you think something’s uneducated, doesn’t make it so,” she concludes.
