The HBO series will see the film’s original stars reprise their roles

Eight years after Crazy Rich Asians made history as the first film by a major Hollywood studio to feature an all-Asian cast, the movie’s stars are reprising their roles for a series heading to HBO.

The streaming giant announced the news on social media Thursday. “Not just rich — crazy rich,” read the post. “From Jon M. Chu and Adele Lim, #CrazyRichAsians will continue as an HBO Original Series starting production in 2027.” Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Ronny Chieng, and Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh will return as series regulars in the one-hour original series.

“It’s a ‘Crazy Rich’ family reunion! This series is the sequel we’ve been waiting for, but instead of just one movie, we get eight episodes to delve into the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan’s brilliant books,” said Lim, who co-wrote the screenplay for the 2018 film and will helm the TV series as showrunner and executive producer, per Variety. “Getting to work with the original creative team with the support and vision of HBO and Warner Bros. Television has been a dream. Our writers room is humming and we can’t wait to share what we’ve come up with.”

Based on the bestselling novel by Kevin Kwan, Crazy Rich Asians marked a watershed moment for Asian representation in Hollywood and a promising step forward in an industry filled with one-dimensional stereotypes.

When speaking to Rolling Stone in 2018, Wu — who plays Rachel Chu, an Asian-American economics professor who travels to Singapore and discovers her boyfriend Nick Young’s family is among the country’s wealthiest elite — discussed the fight to have more Asians represented in Hollywood. “We’ve stopped asking if Hollywood is ready,” said Chu. “I think when you look at younger people, Generation Z, they’re not asking for permission — they’re creating their own kind of Hollywood. It’s their lives and their stories. So when Gen Z comes up and there’s some kind of icon in that generation, and they create their own content without needing permission, that’s when I will be like, Yeah guys, fuck, we made it, this is awesome! And it’s starting already.”
