Japanese IT and computing conglomerate Fujitsu Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State of New Mexico to establish a dedicated quantum computing research center in the state. The R&D center will focus on quantum computing hardware, software, algorithm design, and theoretical physics, while integrating with local academic institutions and national laboratories to expand workforce development programs and build regional quantum talent pipelines.

The agreement expands upon existing research collaborations established between Fujitsu and New Mexico State University (NMSU) focused on the FUJITSU-MONAKA high-performance CPU. Under the new framework, Fujitsu, NMSU, and the University of New Mexico’s Quantum New Mexico Institute (QNMI) will evaluate hybrid computing workflows that combine classical HPC, AI accelerators, and quantum simulators with physical QPUs. These hybrid architectures target computational workloads in chemistry, materials discovery, energy, financial modeling, and logistics, using classical supercomputing nodes for control, data preparation, error mitigation, and state validation.

[ Technical & Financial Allocation: New Mexico Quantum Ecosystem ]
Participant / Entity Technical Domain / Primary Function Infrastructure / Capital Vehicle Strategic Operational Mandate
• Fujitsu Limited • Hybrid HPC-QPU architecture & MONAKA CPU • Corporate R&D Center & QNMI Partnership • Quantum algorithm design, system validation, & hybrid classical-quantum control.
• State of New Mexico • Public co-investment & ecosystem grants • $150M Quantum Fund ($450M total state outlay) • Matches private-sector investment to expand domestic quantum manufacturing & R&D.
• Roadrunner Quantum Lab • Incubator & startup ecosystem hub • $25M award via Roadrunner Venture Studios • Construction of downtown Albuquerque quantum campus.
• DARPA / Federal Labs • Independent benchmarking (Sandia / LANL) • DARPA Quantum Frontier Project (QBI) • Hardware testing, error mitigation auditing, & utility-scale validation.

The collaboration builds on New Mexico’s state-level quantum initiatives, including a dedicated $150 million matching fund for corporate quantum expansion and more than $450 million in total state technology infrastructure commitments since 2019. The state’s research ecosystem includes Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory, the DARPA Quantum Frontier Project, and the newly established Roadrunner Quantum Lab campus in Albuquerque. Through the partnership, Fujitsu aims to leverage this regional concentration of national laboratories and universities to advance fault-tolerant quantum algorithm design and system-level engineering.
