Netflix has been looking for another political drama that could match the success of House of Cards, and The Diplomat may be one of its strongest contenders yet. Since debuting in 2023, the Keri Russell-led series has returned with a new season every October, earning increasingly positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes along the way. It has also managed to build a steady audience over time, rather than relying on one big viral moment. And its latest viewership numbers suggest that approach is paying off.
According to Nielsen data reported by The Hollywood Reporter, The Diplomat recorded 1.19 billion minutes of watch time during the week of Oct. 19–25, making it the most-watched streaming original series that week. Season 4 dropped all eight episodes on Oct. 15, and the show’s second full week on the charts actually grew about 21 percent from the 983 million minutes it posted during premiere week. That pattern runs against how binge releases usually behave, since all-at-once drops tend to front-load their viewing and fade fast.

It probably helps that the season debuted with a perfect 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, the best critical opening in the show’s run, continuing a climb from season 1’s 84 percent through season 3’s 97. The one asterisk on the crown is that The Diplomat technically finished second overall for the week.
The top spot went to From, the MGM+ horror series whose first three seasons hit Netflix on Oct.19 and promptly exploded to 1.65 billion minutes, the biggest weekly haul for any acquired show in 2026. That’s the familiar Netflix effect at work, and it doesn’t really diminish what the Debora Cahn drama accomplished among originals. Elsewhere in the top ten, Prime Video’s The Terminal List returned with 830 million minutes, and Peacock’s Crystal Lake ticked up to 790 million, so the competition wasn’t exactly soft.
The timing of all this feels earned rather than lucky. Allison Janney, promoted to series regular for season 4 alongside fellow West Wing alum Bradley Whitford, finally landed the show its first Emmy win this year, and Cahn has lovingly described her ensemble as an insane bag of candy. Netflix clearly noticed the momentum too, renewing the series for a fifth season on Oct. 29, exactly two weeks after the new episodes arrived.
